Shelters in the Virginia North Carolina area will offer contracts to peanut growers during the week of April 2, leaving less than two weeks to complete the sales agreement. Contracts will not be on ASCS forms, as in the past, but on legal documents furnished by each sheller. "We advise each peanut grower signing a contract to read it thoroughly, so they will understand the terms expected by both parties," said J. Lewis Storey, President of the North Carolina Peanut Growers Association. "Also, we hope they will not sign a contract below their cost of production," he said. commodity director of the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation. He succeeds William E. MemberFDfC Open9'E)lSaturdav1April7ForNewAnd Existing IRAs Only Peanut growers in Georgia, Alabama and Florida signed a flurry of contracts over the past tw Based on information froiu ibe Southeast, over 90 percent of the contracts were signed within seven days. Most contracts were signed at levels of $600 per ton for quota peanuts and $400 per ton for additional peanuts, on a ratio of one part quota to one part additionals. A price bidding activity among certain shelters did occur in the Southeast that lasted a few days with prices of $650 per ton for quota peanuts and a floor price of $275 per ton on additional under an open-end agreement. Norfleet L. Sugg, Executive Secretary of the North Carolina Peanut Gowers Association said, "We hope our shelters will offer contracts at levies growers can make a profit, as we are prepared to grow a dependable supply of high quality peanuts for the domestic and export markets." Sugg said, "we want all segments of the peanut industry to make a fair profit, starting with the grower, through the shellers, manufacturers and consumers paying a reasonable price for peanut products." "Our groweres may not want to sign a contract," said B. E. Marks Jr., Manager Peanut Growers Cooperative Marketing Association. "Since we understand the Southeast quota is already contracted, near the $600 per ton level, this allows our local shelters to 'buy-back' our additional peanuts, at the quota support price plus handling charges; thereby placing these peanuts in the domestic market, in competition with $600 per ton from the Southeast. "This action could help our area regain some of the loss in the dometic market, which has occurred over the past several years. Also, contracting restricts the growers' option to respond to a crop shortage or changing market" said Marks.
