School Perquimans students gain degrees ; Fourteen Perquimans County residents received their degrees during commencement exercises an May 30 at College of The Albe marle. More than 600 parents, .relatives, and friends attended the college's twenty-third spring graduation at which 134 degrees were conferred upon 129 grad uates. Sate Repesentative Vernon ti. ?dames told the candidates for de grees, "You have been priv ileged to receive a quality educa tion, and now have the obligation to assure that the privilege of getting an education is available to others who will follow you." ' James, who is vice chairman of the COA board of trustees and the only remaining charter mem tfer of the board, urged his audi ence to set goals for themselves. ? you obtain these goals," he laid, "you probably haven't set them high enough." ; The speaker encouraged the graduates to take an active part in their home-community organi zations and churches. "Use your education and knowledge to im prove your communities," he ad vised. "The smart individual is one who never stops learning un til he stops breathing." Before awarding diplomas, Dr. Parker Chesson, Jr., COA presi dent, presented the college's highest award, the President's Service Cup, to Georgette Lei nani Rosa Magaro. Each year, the graduate who is perceived by college faculty members as one who has contributed the most academically and in extracurri cular activities is selected to re ceive the prestigious recognition. Magaro, a native of Maui, Ha waii, graduated with degrees in both the General Office Technol ogy and Executive Secretary curricula. In 1985, she earned an associate degree in applied sci ence in the Medical Secretary program. Holmes of Hertford received the Masters in Business Adminstra tion degree from the Harvard Business School on June 5 Following graduation, she will work with The First Boston Com pany in New York City as an as sociate in their corporate finance department. School of Science and Mathematics grad uated its fifth class on Saturday, June 7, 1986, in Durham, as 207 seniors were scheduled to re ceive diplomas. Graduation candidates from this area include Elmer G. Boyce and Thomas B. Winslow from Hertford; and Tamara R. Lane of Tyner. The commencement speaker was Otis Edward "Chip" Till man, Jr., who served as student council president at the School of Science and Mathematics during 1980-82, the first two years of its operation. Tillman will enter medical school this fall at the Bowman Gray School of Medi cine at Wake Forest University. Student remarks were deliv ered by John A. Ward of Clark ton, current student council pres ident. The commencement took place at 10:30 a.m. at Northern High School in Durham. Because of limited seating, the ceremony was only to students and their guests. Each of these in one way or another offers a service to our commu nity. The people in these groups are our neighbors and we'd like to know about them. This page will be u*ed to introduce the clubs and their members to the community. We'd also like to share the history of eoch dub in the county.
