The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, April 27, 1995 - Page 7 Sports Hunter skills teams aim high, win state trophies The Perquimans County Schools Hunter Safety teams brought home a trunkload of trophies from the state tourna ment Saturday in Ellerbe. The middle school team fin ished third overall out of a field of a dozen. Trey Lewis shot a perfect score in trap and outpaced his opponent in a shoot-off to take first place and lead his junior team to a second place finish. In archery, Perquimans again took second place behind the first-place finish of Lonnie Bunch. The juniors finished third in rifle, with James Davenport taking second place in individ ual competition. Jeremy Jennings paced the junior hunter skills team. The senior team from the high school finished fifth out of a field of 23, missing the third place mark by only 18 points. The competition started out rocky for the seniors. Brock Nixon shot a perfect score in trap, while his teammates missed some targets. The team protested after finding that the trap thrower was not working properly. State officials would only allow Perquimans to Pirates take down Bruins After taking a first-round 1-0 loss in the Perquimans Invitational Easter Tournament, the Pirates dug in to defeat enfield Academy, then hit past Camden, 18-10, in their final contest. It wasn’t a great day for pitchers on either team, but the Perquimans bats were hot. John Nixon gave the Pirates a 3-2 lead in the first with a three-run homer. Nixon didn’t get much else to swing at dur ing the game, taking two walks. Clint Eley led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot. He had a single later in the same inning. Mark Clinkscales had three hits, including a double that bounced over the fence. Leary Winslow pounded three hits. A.J. Miller had a double and a single. Brock Nixon had a sin gle and a sacrifice to deep cen ter. Carson Stallings stretched a single into a triple courtesy of Camden’s defense. Chris Stanton had a single. Clean-up batter Donnie Markham hit a round-trip shot against Enfield, but got more balls than strikes against Camden, walking three times. Winning pitcher Mike Salvatore took two walks. Perquimans sa hedule called for tournament rematches this week. Enfield Academy will be in Hertford Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Camden on Friday at 7 p.m. The Pirates junior varsity squad dropped its first game in a tournament in Elizabeth City Thursday, but came back to win its second contest. Miller, Carson Stallings and Nixon reshot, with Winslow, Miller and Stallings shooting perfect scores and ending up in a tie breaker. Winslow took second place in the state, as did the team. The delay pushed back the entire senior competition, and resulted in lower than usual scores for the Perquimans squad. Miller turned in the highest hunter skills score for the Perquimans team. Amber Bass led the rifle competition. Martin Bateman paced the archery squad. $ SAVE MOIVEY $ Car & Truck Engines Transmissions Instaiied MAHNOS AUTO W. TODAY & EVERY DAY FREE! TAKE ONE Sanders apprehended Courtesy Ford, Lincoln, Mercury's used car buyer's shopping binge finally over by Steve Evans Courtesy Gazette Bureau Chief Ronald Sanders, Courtesy Ford, Lincoln, Mercury's used car buyer, was finally caught early this morning by Courtesy authorities. Sander told salesmen that he saw so many customers on the lot that he figured he would blend right in. At approximately 8:30 a.m. Sanders was spotted surveying his most recent used car purchases, and he was approached from behind by Rob Biddle, up and coming Courtesy salesperson, "May Fhelp you find anything sir?" Biddle asked. According to Biddle, Sanders turned around, and immediately "bolted." Tim Applegate, Courtesy sales rep., while taking a customer out to test drive a 1995 Mustang GT Convertible, spotted Saunders running full stride across the lot. Applegate immediately told his prospective customer to "follow that man." The customer, who wished to remain anonymous, easily headed Sanders off with the Mustang's powerful engine. He later purchased the car, but that's another story. Sanders was apprehended and tied up by Courtesy authorities. "We now have so many used cars, trucks & vans, we have to do something to get rid of them," Sales Manager Ray Gay said."Our customers will be getting some unheard of deals because we just have too many cars." Sanders has a meeting with the big boss next week and sources say he has lots of explaining to do.
