School report cards available for review Students take home report cards to inform parents about their progress in school. Schools themselves are now required to issue report cards to inform the public about their progress. North Carolina law requires that local school systems issue annual school building improvement reports for each school. The first report card for each Perquimans County school was released in March 1995. The recently released 1994 Report Cards are based on information from the 1993-1994 school year. The second report card, to be released in March 1996 will contain information from the current school year. Basically, each report card contains information on each school’s improvement plan, on the school’s staff and on school and corhmunity characteris tics. Student performance on statewide end-of-grade and end-of-course tests is the basis of the fourth section of the report card. Interested persons are urged to read the 1994 School Building Improvement Reports. These report cards are available for review in each school office, at the Perquimans County Board of Education office building, and at the Perquimans County Public Library. NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC PERQUIMANS COUNTY THIHALOMETHANES FOUND IN DRINKING WATER The water supply system serving your home reports that test taken last year of the drinking water showed higher levels of total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) tharr is allowed by the State and Federal Drinking Water Regulations. This is the second running of this notice as is required by law and there will probably be at least one or two additional runnings of this same notice. The present quarterly average for TTHMs for Perquimans County was 0.041 ppm. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets drinking water standards and has determined that TTHMs are a health concern at certain levels of exposure. These chemicals are by-products of the chlorination process used to disinfect our drinking water. These chemicals form when chlorine reacts with the organic precursors in the source water. TTHMs have been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals such as rats and mice when the animals are exposed to high levels over their lifetimes. Chemicals that cause cancer in laboratory animals also may increase the risk of cancer in humans who are exposed at lower levels over long period of time. EPA has set forth the enforceable drinking water standards for TTHMs at 0.10 parts per million (PPM) to reduce the risk of cancer which has been observed in laboratory animals. Drinking water which meets that standard (0.10 parts per million) is associated with little to none of the risk and should be considered safe. As stated above, the TTHM test taken during the 1st quarter of 1995 provided an average of 0.041 PPM. The water supply system continues to work with the Division of Environmental Health to determine the best solutions to this problem. We are continuing to consider ( 1) changes in the treatment process; (2) installation of new equipment which would reduce the TTHM level; (3) elimination of the TTHM source; and (4) possible new sources of water. We will continue to notify you of the status of this problem for the next few quarters or until it is fully corrected.
