July 16, 1998 Reugion The Perquimans Weekly Page 5 God requires us to be neighborly ByT.P ALEXANDER Central Newspaper Services Be,a good neighbor (Proverbs 3:27-25;14:21) “Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do ft;’’(Verse 3;27) Our present studies are from the summer quarter of lessons and given under the title, “Wisdom for Living.” Currently we are in unit two of this series of studies and our lessons are given under the subtitle, “Proverbs on living a disciplined life.” Today’s study is purposely givep to direct and center our thoughts on being a good neighbor. We consider this to be central attribute to smooth and happy relation ships, and void of contentions between people. Our lessons from Proverbs are following a natural progression. • They began with an exhor tation to listen and to learn of wisdom, which begins with reverence for God. Then we were urged to trust God as the siource of wisdom. One scholar noted, concerning this, that. Services ♦♦♦ Bay Branch A.M.E. Zion Bay Branch A.M.E. Our governments, that is, our cities, counties, states and fed eral government, and our churches, all have programs and facilities to take care of the hungry and homeless citi zens. That doesn’t mean that some people don’t go to bed at times hungry and cold. It is evident that society does not, or cannot, reach all people everywhere. .American’s heart is good and it reaches out to help the helpless, and our churches play a large part in that. Poverty - stricken folk - those who are genuinely unable to meet their own mate rial needs - have a special claim on God’s people. In Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, he states a princi ple that those who give will ingly to others will be blessed with “all sufficiency” and with the increased ability to abound to every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:9-8) The plight of bad neigh bors (Proverbs 3:31-35) “The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. ” (Verse 33) One does not sense the full impact of what God’s curse and God’s blessing mean, until he reads Moses’ pronounce ment in Deuteronomy, Chapter 28...Please read it. We Christians sometimes become confused. We look out upon the worldly scene and we see Godless people prospering - conversely, will also see some Godly people in financial straights. These situations may be confusing to some Christians. Put in perspective, howev er, God did not promise Christian people “a rose gar den existence.” His promise is to fulfill our human and spiri tual needs. At the end of the age every one will stand before God and give account of his, or her, life. What did we do with that which God blessed us with? Our printed text now takes us to one more verse, from the heart of Proverbs, re-empha- sizing the essence of good neighborliness - helping those in need. “He that despiseth his neighbor sinneth: but he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.” Christianity in it’s purest sense, is all embracing in both our relationship with God and with our fellowman. We are to have a salvation relationship with God first; then follow the precepts set forth in the scriptures in our daily living. From time to time we need to take stock of our selves and measure our neigh borliness according to God’s requirements of us. (Lesson based on the International Sunday School Lessons) I k ;. We would like to thank our church family ;; & friends for all the prayers, cards, visits, '; gifts and many acts of kindness shown to !; us during John’s heart surgery and since his recovery at home. Box 45 Hertford, NC 27944 County Manager for Perquimans County The: for the: Weefe Come Worship With Us Why should anyone choose to be a follower of Jesus? Why would anyone choose to become a member of a church?? These are the kinds of questions that are rarely breathed in church, but questions worth honest, frank consideration. Leonard Sweet attempts answers in his book. Faith Quakes. Don’t become a Christian because God meets your needs. Become a Christian because the gospel is true, and Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Don’t become a part of an organismic body of Christ for psychological support and intimacy. Become a flesh-and-blood member of community because that is how God can be glorified in your life and belong in your midst, (pg. 89) I once heard a pastor say that he was tired of hearing church people talk about their need to be fed. He observed that if feeding oneself spiritually is the primary task of the church, then crosses should be removed from sanctuaries and replaced with feeding troughs. As John C. Hammond says, “WE are more important than you and I.” Our community is blessed with a host of faith families. The opportunities to live out God’s call on our lives are numerous. But DON’T GO TO CHURCH THIS WEEK TO HAVE YOUR NEEDS MET! Go to wait on God, to offer as much of yourself to as much of God as you can understand. DON’T GO TO CHURCH THIS SUNDAY TO GAIN PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT AND INTIMACY!! Go just as you are - warts and all - and offer yourself as a living sacrifice to the God who died and rose from the dead for You. Go with the idea of offering your friendship and support to others just as Jesus Christ offers His transforming friendship, at no charge, to YOU.
