Celebrate
Success

Despite the challenges of
2020, the Chowan, Gates and
Perquimans County Exten
sion Master Gardener pro
gram continued the mission of
helping gardeners put knowl
edge to work.
Over 60 volunteers were in
volved in the program and in
2020 there were 11 newly certi
fied Extension Master Garden
ers. To complete certification,
volunteers must complete a
4Chour training program and
a 40-hour volunteer internship
through North Carolina State
University.
To recertify, volunteers must
complete a minimum of 10
hours of advanced training and
20 hours of volunteer service.
The newly certified Extension
Master Gardener volunteers
are: Elizabeth Coleman, Cheryl
Fultz-Messinger, Deanna Klin-
gel, Kathy Miller, Rick Murphy,
Julie Murphy, Susan Rothchild,

Hertford Police Chief Dennis
Brown’s last day was Tuesday. He
was hired as Hamlet’s police chief.
Though there is no official word
from Town Hall as to who is to lead
the police department, word on
the street suggests that a familiar
face will serve as interim chief until
council hires a new chief.

courtroom’s naming for Cole,
better known as J.C., during a
reception for Cole at Museum
of the Albemarle on Saturday.
Cole, who is retiring from
the 1st Judicial District bench
on Wednesday, was also pre
sented the N.C. Friend of the
Court Award by retired Court
of Appeals Judge Linda McGee
during Saturday’s event. The
award has been presented only
