So ' take warning in time. Yours truly, VJ. M. SMITH, ,) Sheriff. ; Feb. 14th, 1906, QoVlit'ft EST Galvo For rcts Burn Sorts ; Blackturn's Indictment. Statesvllle Landmark. The expected ha happened. The grand Jury of the Federal Court at Asheville has returned two true bills of indictment against Congressman Blackburn, ot this district, in which he is charged with receiving foes for appearing before the departments in Washington since his election to Congress. As The Landmark has already stated, these charges against Black burn are not new. They were talk ed about two years ago and there were threats then that the district attorney would indict Blackburn. The Congressman denies his guilt. We devoutly hope, in the interest of public decenoy, that he will be able to establish his Innocence. If Mr. Blackburn is guilty he should be punished. But there is one thing The Landmark believes in, and that is the "spuare deal1' we hear so much talked about and see so little of; and we doubt seriously if Mr. Blackburn is getting a square deal in this transaction. If be is not this does not eicuse his wrong-doing, but it should forever damn those who if they are guilty of the same or similar offences, as is charged are trying to make a scape-goat of Black burn. In the first place, why has Blackburn's indictment been delay ed until now? These charges against him have not just now come to light. Is It to punish him for opposing Holton and the State organization? On its face it is a oase of retaliation pure and simple. Excuse is made for Holton on the ground that he is acting under orders from Washing ton; that the reason the prosecution was not begun before was because the Washington authorities would not consent to it. It will take more than a mere statement to make the general public accept this explana tion. Have the authorities at Wash ington just now become virtuous? No. There is every reason to believe that if Blackburn had not been so unwise as to endeavor to control North Carolina patronage the indict ments would never have been heard of. If this is true, and it will take much evidence to disprove it, while it in nowise, excuses Blackburn's wrongdoing it utterly discredits those who are prosecuting hiiu. The truth is, other prominent Fed eral officeholders in North Carolina are charged with grave offences and these charges will probably be made public before the Blackburn prosecution is ended. There is reason to believe that there is some thing in the charges that are handed about privately. It would be a glo rious day in North Carolina for hon esty and uprightness, for decenoy and purity m the public service, If some prosecuting officer with clean hands could bring in a court not touched with a feeling of similar in Anilities, indictments against all these people under charges high and low, ricli and poor, the learnod and the ignorant where a fair, square trial could be had and where no case could go on a technicality. This is an ideal condition that can never be hoped for. Hut the honest people of North Carolina, who have no concern in the bickerings and strife among petty political factions, can and should demand that all these be treated aliko. That the district attorney who is charged with paying i a day for board and oharging the goverinent $4 should be made to answer just the same as the petty revenue officer who pays 25 cents for a dinner and charges the goverinent 3f cents; and it should be ascertained whether Fed eral judges, as was shown in the case of Swain of Florida, aro charging, or hate charged, the full amount allow ed them $10 a day for expenses when they actually paid only a frac tion of this amount The report went abroad after the Swain trial that some of the judges were so alarmed that they covered back in to the Treasury amounts collected In this way. These and many other things need examination, and the demand for equal and exact justice for all should be made so loud that the President, with his boasted re oord of a square deal, could not af ford to Ignore it. We are frank to say, however, that we have no hope that this will be done. Blackburn's enemies have sought to disoredite him and it will probably end there. Looked at from the partisan standpoint, Dem ocrats In this district would, be glad to have him discredited so as to get rid of him. But unless Blackburn Is convicted, and we hare serious doubts of this, he may come back ln thls district posing at a persecuted martyr and be stronger than ever. It is easy to arouse sympathy for a man, even among those who dislike him, when It appears that he is not getting a square deal. i A Chicago paper says that detec tives In that city are looking for a girt who is an heiress to a large for tune. Several meo her who are not detective are doing the same thing. Age Qualifications in Government. Our constitution specifies that a man to be president must have reach ed the aga of 86 yean, to be a senator 80 and a represenatlve In congress 25. Constituencies are seldom tempted to enoroaoh upon these limits, al though Instances of electing men who were under these ages are not un known. At present the youngest senator Is Mr. Burkett of Nebraska, wno has just passed his thirty-eighth birthday; the oldest, Mr. Pettus of Alabam, born In the administration of Monroe, soon to be 85. The oldest member of the house, Mr. Sperry of Conneticut, is in his seventy-ninth year. Illinois has an exceptional number of young men in this congress. One of them does not give his age in the' directory, another registers his 28. Theodore Roosevelt not only is the youngest president, but remained the youngest occupant of the office till last autumn, when he reached the age at whioh Grant was inaugurated. William Henry Harrison, inaugura ted at the age of 08, was the oldest president. The supreme court, the members of which are rarely young men when appointed for life, shows the highest average age of any important body connected with the national govern ment. As at present constituted, that average is 66 years; and the youngest of the justices is 56. Youths Companions. The Breath of Life. It's a significant fact that the strongest animal of its size, the gorilla, also has the largest lungs. Powerful lungs means powerful creatures. How to keep the breath ing organs right should be roan's chiefest study. Like thousands of others, Mrs. Ora A. Stephens, of Port Williams, O., has learned how to do this. She writes: "Three bottles of Dr. King's New Discovery stopped my cough of two years and cured me of what my friends thought eon- sumption. O, its grand for throat and lung troubles." Guaranteed by J. E. Shell druggist. Price 50c and 1.00. Trial bottle free. Our Good Roads. The News Leader has this to say wjth regard to Mecklenburg county roads: "The Charlotte (N. C) News says certain it is that Mecklenburg, that State, 'is without an equal in her roads and the blessings arising from her good road system arc nianr and constantly in evidence,' and the Mecklenburg roads were built by convict labor." True, it is brother, that most of Meckleuburg's county roads were built by convict labor, and you are exactly right in conceding that ' the State" of Mecklenburg "is without an equal" in the excellence of her good roads. Charlotto News. Deafness Cannot be Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deaf ness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tule. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hear ing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless tire Inflammation can be taken out and this tubo restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which Is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that' cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for cir culars, free. F. J. chunky Si Co., Toledo, O. One of the foul est and most brutal murders ever committed in this section or in the State was done at West Durham last night at midnight, when John H. Hodges dragged his wife from her sick bed and shot her to death. The alx ohildren of the mother wit nessed the murder and were afraid to speak when the brutal father and husband drew his pistol and fired the fatal shot into the heart of his wife and erstwhile companion. One son, the oldest, did enter protest and did what he could to prevent the terrible deed. "Stand back and shut your mouth," said the brutal demon. "If you say a word I will kill you." With this the father and husband knocked back the son and he fell to the floor. This was before the mur der, but while Hodges was trying to shoot. 'I knew when I deeded this house and lot to you, Miss Mattie," said the demon, "that you would kick me out." 'I did not," pleaded the helpless wife. "I have been very sick and am sick now. All I want is for you to be good and do right. You can have the house and lot," she said, this be ing according to the statement of her eldest son, who heard the entire matter. 'You can take this," he hissed. The shot fired. A life ended. Within two hours he was arrested and locked up in the polioe station. Charlotte Observer. Always Keeps Chamberlains Cough Remedy in His House. "We would not be without Cham berlain's Cough Remedy, It is kept on hand continually in our home," says W. W. Kearney, editor of the Independent, Lowry City, Mo. That is juBt what every family should do. When kept at hand ready for instant use, a cold may be checked r.t the outset and cured in much less time than after it has become settled in the system. This remedy is also with out a peer for croup in children, and will prevent the attack when given as soon as the child becomes hoarse, or even after the croupy cough ap pears, which can only be done when the remedy is kept at hand. Stoekhol m's public library con tains a wonderful work which is call ed "The Devil's Code" aud which, in addition to its extraordinary name, is Baid to be the biggest manuscript in the world. Every letter is most beau tifully drawn, and the magnitude of the work is so great that it Beems im possible for any single monk to have done It. The story of the origin of the man uscript, however, not only gives It as the work of one man, but also states it to be the work of a single night. The story runs as follows: "A poor monk had been condemned to death, but was told mockingly by his judges that If he was able to copy the whole 'Code' between darkness and dawn he would be saved. Rely ine udoii the impossibility of the task, those who sentenced him fur nished him with the original copy of the '('olo,' with pen ink and parch ment, and left him. "Death must have len as little liked In the middle ages as it is now, for the monk, forgetting the hop lessness of his task, commenced it. Before long, however, he saw that he could not save his own life by such weak exertions, and, fearing a cruel aud horrible death, he invoked the aid of the prince of darkness, promising to surrender his soul if he was assisted in the task. "The devil obliged him by appear ing on the spot, accepted the con tract and sat down to the work, and next morning 'The Devil's Code' was finished, the monk being found dead. The copying clerk from the infernal regions presumably fled away with the poor man.s soul as soon as the wicked compact was finished." Pearson's Weekly.
