OalVItt's Wt Qalvo For rUeSf Burnt, tores Wilkesboro Chronlole. A friend has shown us the follow lue dispatoh which appeared io lie Charlotte Observer of the 22nd: Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 11. "The State of Wilkes" came in for special prayer from the erengelist, Rev. Dr. R. A. Torrejr' at his afternoon service attended by nearly 8.000 people this afternoon. "Here Is a request for prayer," said Dr. Torrey, "from a man who haa been to this revival aud he writes on board a train on bis way baok to No. Carolina. He says pray for a revival in my town, Wilkes boro, N. C. There is a great deal of liquor made and drunk io both the town and county, so that it has come to be called "whiskey Wilkes." Dr. Torrey himself offered the prayer' and said: "Oh, Lord, bless Wilkesbo ro, N. O. The devil is powerful but Thou art more powerful and he can not hiuder Thy work. Light the fires of revival In that community and county and may many be saved Amen." We always rejoice when others in terest themselves honestly for our good, and real genuine petitions to the Throne for the good of Wilkes will be always appreciated. Hut this appears more like a fake for Greens boro trial purposes, in accordance with the program of the lawyers de fending Samuels" No liquor is now or ever has been made In Wilkesboro For eight or ten years Wilkesboro lms been "dry." We cannot boast of three or four saloons to every po liceman like Philidelphia can. Above this, there is no place of its popula tion that l.as more and better church es than Wilkesboro, and the country to its utmost parts can't line up a more intelligent, consecrated, faith ful and beloved aggregation of cler gy than we have right here. If pray ers can help and they do help none reach the Throne earlier than Gwalt ney' Ownby anl Robinson, nor are their petitions tinged with the 11a vor of slander. The face of it shows "fake" for no true honest minister would try to persuade the Ixml to abandon his scigHof the headquarter strongholds of Hatan in Philidelphia and take a vacation in Wilkesboro. We appreciate prayers, but not "fnke" inisrepresentatioiiM. Deafness Cannot be (Hired by local applications, a they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only ont way to cure deaf ness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an Inllniued condition of the mucous lining of the KiiRtach'an Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hear ing, and when it is entirely closed. Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused Jy Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for cir culars, free. F. J. ctikxky & Co., Toledo, (). ' - V CJ Washington, D. C, March 8. Dis trict Attorney Holton pat In his final answer to-day to the charges filed against him in order to defeat his confirmation for district attorney. It is said that Mr. Blackburn has other charges to make against the district attorney, but it is certain that no action will be taken by the sub judi cary committee, which is considering the charges, until the return of the congressman, and there will be ample time for Mr. Blackburn to be heard Lfnrther. Id his answer today Mr. Holton denies absolutely that he charged the government a higher rate than he (mid for his hotel ac comodations at Asheville. Says he paid $4 a day, and by way of retalia tion avers that Mr. Blackburn paid s ime when assistant district attorney. Other charges relating to favoritism In the prosecution of violators of Fed eral statues are answered by Mr. Hol ton in great detail. The transcript of several court records are filed in answer to some of these charges. The district attorney brands as false the allegations that he said he would not act on a report made by Deputy Col lector Albright with reference to con ditions in Wilkes because it would result in injury to the Republican party. Raleigh Observer. Always Keeps Chamberlains Cough Remedy in His House. "We would not be without Cham berlain's Cough Remedy. It is kept on hand continually in our home," says W. W. Kearney, editor of the Independent, Lowry City, Mo. That is just what every family should do. When kept at hand ready for instant ubp, a cold may be checked at the outset aud cured in much less time than after it has become settled in the system. Imagine a farmer tryiDg to raise a crop by sitting on a fence lookThg over his farm and wishing for a nloe crop of wheat or corn to spring up on it ridiculous isn't it? but not more so than the merchant who hides a stock ef goods away In a storeroom and thon aits down on the counter, hoping that the people will ooms In and buy. Two negroes shot a white man at Springfield, Ohio, last week In a diffi culty. This action on the part of the negroes so. enraged the white people that a regular raee war was begun. Negroes were beaten and their houses burned In many parts of the city. Eight companies of the State troops were called out, and it Vae With dlfloulty the mobs could be cohtroled. : ' ' " :. Man. The editorial writer in the Chicago Advance, who writes under the nom de Iplume of "Grapho." gives this wholesome advice to young men In an article of some length: "I have looked at Niagara with rapt admiration, but I have never said Don't to it. I look at the young with far greater admiration, and I am not going to say Don't to him, at least, not this time. "No, young man, I say, Do. Do your best. If you are in school, do your best; if you are in a shop, do your best; if you are a clerk, do your best; if you are running an engine or holding a plow, do your best; if you are sexue girl's best fellow, do your best. The Americau girl is worthy of the best fellow that walks the green earth. "Read the best books and the best magaziues and the best newspapers. Associate with the best people. Take counsel of your mother, for she loves you with the love of au angel. Talk matters over with your father, for he is leading you with his heart strings. Think the best thoughts. Cherish the best ideals. Admire the best heroes. Walk up aud down tho pages of history with its noblest and truest men. Fix your eye on the bravo spirits who Btood in the storms, who faced the wrath of men and did not quail, who went Into the lire and 6miled at the flames, who took the world's welfare on their great hearts and bore the race up ward. "Go deep into the thought of the men and womeu, who, whether in philosophy, poetry or romance, have Interpreted to us the mysteries of our striving, of the fever and the fret of this daily life. And look deeper still into the law of being which declares itself every day. Lis ten to the daily Btory of human trans gression and penalty and woe as you would to a blast of the trumpet call ing the dead to judgment. Be quick to hear and quick to do the com mnndents, whether spoken amid the thunders of Sinai or the wail of hu man expeience. "Be brave; be strong. Be a man. Be a follower of the one perfect Sou of Man." Judje Waddell Declines. Asheville, March 3. Sonic doubt is expressed here as to whether the cases against Congessman Spencer Blackburn will be called at Greens boro tho middle of neit month, ac cording to the programme arranged by counsel for the government and the defense iu open court here last week. When the middle of April was selected as a time for the trial of the caws it was believed that Judge Waddill, of Richmohd, would be trial judge. It was stated at the time that Judge Waddill was accept able to both sides and that both the government and Mr. Blackburn would like for him to sit during the special term. It is learned now, however, that Judge Waddill has declined to try the cases. It Is also learned that April is a busy month with the district and circuit judges eligible to sit at Greensboro and that thus far an available judge has not been secured. Judges Golf and Mor ris have both beeu mentioned as trial judges for tho Blackburn cases as has also Judge Kellar, who pre sided at the trial of William E. Breese at Charlotte last year. It is said that all three of these judges will be very busy during April aud that there is doubt as to their hav ing the time to preside at a special term. The belief obtains in certain quarters here that the Blackburn cases will not be tried in April Char lotte Observer. Eczema, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Itch, Ring Worm, Herpes, Barbers' Itch.
