The purpose of the program is to enable schools, such as WSSU that do not offer a major or minor in physics to do so by sending their students to Howard University for a maximum of three summers or a minimum of one summer for their ad vanced undergraduate training in physics. The program f study for the students while at Howard University includes physical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, ther modynamics, options, modern physics, mathematical methods and general physics. The advantages of the program are two fold with benefits to both the students and the institution. In addition to educational benefits, the students receive full support, including travel and tuition, books, room and board, and inci dental expenses. Through the pro gram the University will receive funds for needed equipment to strengthen the current physics program aside from expanding the physics offerings; and funds are provided for faculty release time for the current physics in structor to develop the physic curriculum. WSSU, which is making strides to wards establishing a degree program in physics, is participat ing in this develop mental program for the first time this summer, students were selected for the summer study program based on their scholastic achievement in aca demic areas which support their express ed interest in physics.
