WILKESBORO I Pathfinder Poll Reports a Very Gose Race Emil Hurja, publisher of Path finder magazine, who was the “righthand man” of Chairman James A. Farley of the Democra tic national committee and ac Every Article in Our Store i is I Guaranteed ’ I Home-owned Store WADE H. DAVIS | Hot-water Heaters $4.00 up Exchange Prices ion Generators and Batteries — MT. AIRY — curately predicted the Roosevelt election of 1936, gives Wendell Willkie 300 electoral votes against 231 for Roosevelt in his poll released in the latest issue of his magazine. Hurja, however, says it’s any man’s election and that results of the poll through October indicate that Pennsylvania holds the key to the election results. His figures show that Willkie now holds a hairline margin in that all-impor tant state and should he hold that slight advantage he should win the election. He further says that should Roosevelt forge ahead in the Keystone state, the third-term candidate will win by a vote of 267 to 264 for Willkie. Hurja’s Pathfinder poll shows that the third term candidate has the 10 states of the solid south tucked away along with the six border states, six of the eight Mountain states, two of the three Pacific Coast states and one of the Eastern Seaboard states, mak ing a total of 25 states and 231 electoral votes. While North Carolina is listed as being in the Roosevelt column along with the “solid south”, Hur ja’s chart shows his popularity is rapidly declining as Democrats desert him and swing their sup port to Wilkie. In 1936 the third term candidate polled 73 percent of the vote in the state and the poll indicates there has been a change of 13 percent toward Will kie, leaving Roosevelt with only 64 percent of the vote. The poll gives Willkie better than 50 percent of the popular vote in the seven farm states, all four Lake states, Wyoming and Colorado in the Mountain group, IMPORTANT NOTICE! This adds up to 23 states and a vote of 300, or the necessary margin for victory. Hurja’s poll predictions in the past have been uncannily accur ate and much significance is seen in his most recent statement on the presidential race since less than two weeks remain before election.
