Weir was speaker of j the day at the meeting of the Book I club which met Thursday afternoon, January 29, at the home of Mrs. Aubrey Mauney at which time Mrs. E. A. Shenk was hostess. Mrs. Weir, in v charming manner, reviewed the book, "Came A Cavalier;" The Mauney home was attractively decorated for the occasion with white chrysanthemums and poinsettias. After the enjoyable program, Mrs. Shenk served an enticing salad and dessert course. The bridal' couple cut the first slice of cake and the remainder of the cake was cut j and served by Mrs. J. S. Ware. Mrs, | Edgar Bell served punch and others . assisting in serving were Mrs. Dock Phillips, aunt of the bride-elect, Joan Ford, sister of the bride elect, | June and Mary Sue Beatty, the brideelect's cousins. Thirty close friends and relatives were guests at the delightful party, i Baptist WMS Plans Anniversary Party The Women's Missionary Society of the First Baptist church, in celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of WMS, will entertain the women of the church at an informal anniversary party which will be given Friday, February 6, in the T. E. L. classroom of the church. Every" woman in the church is im_ vited to be a guest and in order to give all an opportunity to attend, there will be an afternoon party, beginning at 3:30 and one in the evening which will start at 7:30. Plans have been made for a delightfrjl affair and a large number of women is expected to be present at both hours. Methodist Seniors To Have Pound Party The Senior class, ages 15 to 18, of Central Methodist church plan to have a "Pound" party in the-church basement on Thursday, February 12, at 7:30 p. m. Junior Club Members Heard Gaston L,awyer A large group of members of the Junior Woman's Club met on Monday evening at the home of Miss Irene Allen to hear Charles ?. Hamilton, jr., prominent Gastonia lawyer, speak about American Citizenship. Mr. Ijamilton, an able speaker, based his talk on quotations of Abraham Lincoln, stressing many of Lincoln's ideals which made him a good citizen. "If I were asked, said. Mr. Hamilton, What is the first re-1 quisite of being a good citizen, I i would unhesitatingly reply, 'Being j a good Christian.' Good Christians make good citizens and there are no. good citizens who aren't good Christians." In conclusion, Mr. Hamilton read a poem by Edwin ' Markham which was in the form of an inspiring creed. Mrs Lynwood Parton, president, was in charge of the'meeting. As she presided at the business session, several issues of importance were discussed. A resolution that Governor Cherry be urged to call a special session of the State Legislature to increase teacher salaries that was signed by Donald L. Parker, president of the Kings Mountain unit of the North Carolina Education Association, was read and the resolution being approved by the-members, it was.voted to send a letter to Governor Cherry which would constitute an endorsal of the resolution by the club. A committee was appbintcd to make plans for a benefit card party to be held in the near future. After the dispatch of business,anauction sale of donated articles was held which netted a substantial sum which will be used as a club payment for the Bible teacher in the city schools. Two new members, Miss Lula Mae Teague and Mrs. John* H, RudiaMl, jr., were welcomed Into the club. . Mrs. Paul Hendrix was a visitor, f -During the social-hour, the hostesses, Miss Allen and Miss Helen Ramsey, assisted by Miss Diane Gamble, served an enticing salad and dessert course. Founders Day Program Planned For PTA Tea A sDeciat urogram concerning Founders Day will be-presented at the meeting of the Central Parent^ Teacher Association which will be held next Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 4 o'clock. Another feature of the meeting will be a tea to be giver, in connection with theobservapce of Founders Day. C._ Council To Sponsor Clothing Collection Plans are underway for the National Clothing Collection Campaign which will be sponsored this year in Kings Mountain by the Council of Churchwomen with the cooperation ! of all the churches and the business ; firms of the town. Last year, the sponsoring of this ! campaign to obtain new and wear able used clothing for the needy peoples of Europe was the first step taken by the newly organized local [unit of Churchwomen and was met by overwhelming success. The amount of clothing collected here was large enough .to draw congratula- , tions from both the county and state ; chairmen. The Council hopes this [ year to exceed the amount collected last year. The drive starts on Sunday, Feb. < 8, and during the week between that ( i timo and F<*h it. ic hnriaH that | everyone in town will take their j j gifts of new clothing or clean, wear- : able used clothing to the church of 1 their choice where the articles will ! be sorted and packed for shipment, j Any type of clothing is acceptable ?shoes, dresses, sweaters, coats, jac j . kets, hose, underwear ? anything | to wear can be put to good use and I 'is desperately needed by European j 'families. Ramseur or their regular meeting of the nonth.' * In keeping with the Valentine seaion, the Ramseur home was unusual y pretty with striking arrangements if red carnations and flowering >lants. Mrs. Fred Plonk presented an enertaining program on "Hats." Mrs. Iright Ratterree and Mrs. Tolly Shubrd gave amusing articles on the lubject and the guests participated n a contest Which was written on imall Mexican sombreros. Mrs. Shuord and Mrs. Grady King scored a ie and in drawing for the prize, Mrs. Shuford was winner. The prize Was i hat, an original in the strictest lense. To conclude the program, vlrs.
