Justice Meant Suspended Term William Moore, Kings Moun tain Negro, only wanted “Justice" from Judge Jack White because of his six children, and received a six-tmonth suspended sentence on a charge of illegal possession of non-tax paid whiskey for bev erage purposes In City record er’s court Monday afternoon. Moore plead guitty. A second charge against Moore, driving a vehicle after re vocation of driver’s license, was continued until counsel for the defendant could Ibe present. The defendant said the white liquor found In his home by Kings Mountain Police officers had been purchased for a party. Sentence for Moore was sus pended on condition that he be of good behavior for six months, 'pay a $25 fine and costs of court. Oscar Gladden, Jr., of Gantt street, was found guilty of aban donment and non-support of his wife, Katherine Gladden, and four children. Gladden, who plead not guilty, received a six month road sentence, suspended on condition that he pay $20 each week to the clerk of court for the support of his wife and children as long as the couple are separated, Ibe of good behav ior for six months, and ipay costs of court. Mrs. Gladden testified that for the past several months her husband has not properly provided for her and the four children. A. J. Powell submitted to a charge of issuing a worthless check in -the amount of $10 and received a 30-day road sentence. Powell’s sentence was suspend ed on condition that he pay the amount of the worthless check • and costs of court. The check was made payable to cash and had been endorsed by Bessemer City Negro News By Mrs. Cannie Gordon 105 Carpenter Street Mr. and Mrs. Willie Lee Ro berts and children of High Point, V. C., spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. George Gordon. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Graham and Mr. and Mrs. George Gor don and children spent last Sun day at Lake Lure. Mrs. Mammie Quinn and her granddaughter, Carolyn Hick man, left Saturday for Detroit, Mich., where they will spend some time with Mrs. Quinn’s daughter and other relatives. Robert D Tate, Jr., left Tues day, June 21 to spend the sum mer with his father, Robert Tate, Sr., of Memphis. Tenn. Boy Scout News On Monday, June 20, Troop No. 5 held its regular meeting at Pauline clubhouse. The meeting was opened with the Scout Laws led by Ruibie Robertson. We then played a game and had a race. Each 'boy ran the mile length of the race in at least 8 minutes. Then we [previewed a play which we are to do at Piedmont Boy Scout Camp. The meeting was closed with the Scout Ben ediction led by Conway Jolly. Scribe: Conway Jolly El-Bethel-Bethware News (Mrs. Leonard Gamble) Friday afternoon at 2:30 p. m. the El Bethel Home Demonstra tion club met at the home of Mrs. Eva Morris. A good crowd was present. At the close of the afternoon Mrs. Morris served iqe cream, cake, punch, and nuts. Sunday morning the fathers of El Bethel had charge of the morning services. .Those taking part were J. T. Barber, Dean Cost ner, Lloyd Patterson, Jack An thony, Pete Heavner, and 'W. F. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Gamble of Waxhaw came Thursday especi ally to attend the wedding of a niece, Miss Sara Lee Roberts, on Thursday night to Jack Mabry of Shelby. Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Perry and Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Short vis ited Mr. and Mrs. J» C. Perry of Clover, S. C., Monday. Mr. Perry died at hife home here Monday. Miss Rachel Neal spent Sat urday at the Shelby hospital where she is contemplating nur ses' training. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mayes and daughter of near Augusta, Ga., spent the weekend here with Mr,, and Mrs. Frealo Mayes. Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Matthews and son, I?ddie, and Mrs. Lena Ware of Miama, Fla., came Sun day to spend several weeks vis iting friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. G. L. Eaker spent the weekend at Wilmington. Miss Doris Crawford was Mon day guest of her sister, Joan, at Queens college, Charlotte. Dog Quarantine On ‘til July 1 There have been no arrests in No. 4 township as a result of the now effective dog quarantine in Cleveland County, Carver Blan ton, county dog warden, said Tuesday. But Mr. Blanton said approxi mately 125 citations have been issued and approximately 5C dogs” have been destroyed in | Number 4 Township. These fig ures do not include the dogs kill I ed and citations issued 'by coun ty and Kings Mountain city offi cers. he said. Mr. Blanton again issued a warning to all dog owners that the quarantine will be in effect throughout the month of June and urged dog owners to keep their dogs confined whether they are vaccinated or not. Any peace officer, he said, has the authority to destroy on sight any dog not confined. The quarantine was called by Cleveland County commissioners June 1 to eliminate all stray dogs who have been preying on live stock and poultry. Byers Under Bond On Assault Charge James R. Byers, of route 2, is free under a $1000 hond after al legedly knifing a Cherryville service station operator Saturday night. ISie-injured man was listed as Joe Hager, owner of the service station where the incident oc curred. Byers was arrested Sunday by Cleveland County deputies and charged by Cherryville police de partment with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. •Gaston County Sheriff Dwight Beam said' Hager stated that an affray developed in Hager’s ser vice station on Main street, Oher ryville, between Hager and J. B. Hawkins, (brother-in-law of By ers. Hager was quoted by Sheriff Beam as saying Byers, jumped into the fight with an open knife, sending it into Hager’s stomach. Hager, who was admitted to Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gas tonia, was not in serious condi tion, Dr. J?hn P. Pond, attending physician, said Monday.
