Gunnells' Note 25th Silver Anniversary At Open House Last Tuesday Evening Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Gunnells celebrated their Silver Wedding anniversary at their home Julj 24, in the evening, when thej held open house for relatives and friends. The rooms of the home were made colorful with vases of sum mer flowers, and the dining ta ble was centered with a bowl o! gladioli and mixed flowers. Gar lands of ivy ran the length of the table, which was covered in an egg shell lace cloth. Misses Peggy Jean Gunnells and Lana Arrowood assisted in serving the anniversary cake, sandwiches, nuts and other par ty delicacies along with punch, which was served from a large service on one end of the table. Mrs. Gunnells wore a light green party dress and a pink shoulder corsage for the event. Out-of-town guests present were: IMr. and Mrs. Wellborn Brookie of Piedmont, S. C., Mrs. J. C. Kee and Mrs. Doris Ivie and daughter, Wanda, of Shelby, and Dever Moore of Blacksburg, S. C. Kecent bride Shower Honoree Mrs. Douglas Houser, recent bride, was honored Saturday evening at a bridal shower giv en at the home of her sister, Mrs. June Martin. Co-hostess for the party was Mrs Evelyn Peavy. Guests showered the bride with miscellaneous household gifts. Mrs. Houser, the former San dra Camp, and Mr. Houser were married Saturday evening. Party refreshments were serv ed. Dr. and Mrs. W. P. Gerlberding and son, Tommy, have returned home after vacationing with friends and relatives in Minneso ta. Back-To-School Fall Fashion Show To Be Staged By Clubwomen Aug. 24 me Junior Woman s Club will sponsor a Back - To - School fall fashion show on Friday night, Aug. 24th, and committees have already begun work on the event. Mrs. Robert Champion, Jr. is general chairman of the show which will feature the showing of 1962 fall fashions suitable for the school - age child, the high school student, the teachers and Mom and Dad for attendance at the P-TA. Most Kings Mountain stores are participating, and list of these firms and models will be announced later. The showing of fall and win ter clothing will be sandwiched with appropriate talent by school - children. Tickets go on sale this week at $1 for adults and 50c for chil dren. Proceeds will support the Junior club’s extensive program of community work. Other committee chairmen, with full program details, will be announced later. Lance New Area Navy Recruiter Chief Boilermaker, Harry G. Lance reported Monday, July 30, 1962, to the Shelby Navy Recrui ting Station to relieve Chief A pel as the Navy Recruiter for Cleveland and Rutherford Coun ties. Chief Alpel is being trans ferred to the Navy Recruiting Station in Greenville, S. C. Chief Lance enlisted in the Navy in Asheville in December 1961 and attained ihis present rate of chief petty officer in 1960. He is a veteran of the Ko rean conflict and holds the fol lowing campaign decorations: The Good Conduct Medal with two subsequent awards, Korean Service Medal with two stars, U nited Nations Medal, China Ser vice Medal, Navy Occupation Medal and National Defense Me dal. Accompanying Chief Lance to Shel'by is his wife, the former Miss Norma Griffin of Ashe ville and their sons, Chuck, two, and Chris, one. They will reside in Shellby at 800 Churchill Drive. Prior to his transfer to Shel by Chief Lance was stationed in Norfolk, Va, on the Staff of Commander, Destroyer Force, United States Atlantic Fleet. As the Area Navy Recruiter, Chief Lance will be available for counseling to all schools of Cle veland and Rutherford Counties about the opportunities offered by the Naval Service. His pres ent itinerary takes him to Forest City on Tuesdays, Rutherford ton on Thursdays, Kings Moun tain on Fridays, and ot the Re cruitftnig Office in Shelby on Mondays and Wednesdays. Kapen To Star In "Can-Can" Ben Kapen, producer of Char lotte Music Theatre, will be ap pearing in ‘'Can-Can” starring Genevieve. Mr. Kapen will por tray the comic lead Boris, a role Hans Oonreid played in the Cole Porter musical on Broadway. “Can-Can,” opening Tuesday, August 7th, is a favorite of ma ny musical theatregoers, and the role Mr. Kapen plays points up his acting versatility. In hie first season in Charlotte, Ben brou ght that season to a memorable close in “Brigadoon” starring Betty White. Last year, Ben joined televis ion star Anthony George in “Mister Roberts” in a production which drew critical raves and was second highest grosser in a year and a (half. As Ensign Pul ver Ben established himself as a favorite of local andiences. Mr. Kapen’s background in cludes, test piloting in World War II, graduating in drama from New York University, and college teaching at Queens Col lege to New York City. '“Can-Can” is the ninth produc tion of the current Charlotte Mu sic Theatre season, and features colorful dancing, vibrant singing, and a hilarious story of life in the artist’s sector of tum-of-the century Paris. “Can-Can starring Genevieve and a great cast pro mises to be the delight of the current season. A community in Northwest North Carolina is specialising in setting up recreation facilities for its people and visitors. Font Not Guilt; Of Affray Charge Pour Kings Mountain youths were acquitted on charges of af fray, two being found guilty of charges of carrying a concealed weapon in Monday’s session of city Recorder’s Court. The charges resulted from an alleged incident wherein a group; of Kings Mountain boys invad-i ed the Negro section to retaliate for a reported incident wherein a white youth was beaten by a Negro. The story was told by arrest ing officer B. P. Cook. Officer Cook said the police de partment had a call on the first; beating on July 24 and got the report there would be trouble the folowing night. The entire police force was called together and the proposed fight in the colored section nip ped in the bud. On later patrols, the officer stopped a car on King Street in which Larry F. Vassy, of Route 1; Jerry Lee Marlow, of Route 2; and Steve T. Mooore, of 313 Fairview Street, were passeng ers. A larke pocket knife, a lug wrench, and several chains were found in the car, Cook report ed. He said after questioning the boys he charged Vassy and Mar low with affray and Moore with j affray and carrying a concealed weapon. Moore, Cook reported, had a chain in his pocket. Cook said he did not see the boys in the Negro section at the time of the investigation there. James B. Harrison, of 407 Cher ry Street, was arrested by Cook as Harrison walked along Deal Street. Cook said Harrison has a homemade blackjack in his pos sesion. Harrison was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and affray. Judge Jack White found the four not guilty of affray, but handed stiff sentences to Harri son and Moore on the concealed weapon charge. Each was sentenced to two years, suspended upon the con ditions they be of good be havior for two years and not vio late any of the laws of North Carolina for the period, pay $100 fine each and the costs of court, and the weapons be destroyed. Judge White ordered that war rants be issued for two others in volved in the case, both minors, for carrying a concealed weapon. Both were to be transferred to the juvenile authorities for 'trial. Other Dispositions: Donald Sanders, 316 W. Ridge Street, larceny (non-compliance with a sentence rendered some months ago), told to pay the cost of the merchandise taken from Home Savings & Loan As sociation in full in a week or the sentence will be put into ef fect. George “Buster” Hope, Jr., 102 E. Gold Street, non - compliance with a non-support sentence, told to pay fifty percent of this week’s paycheck to apply on the amount behind in payments and come into court Monday for in structions on paying the balance. Charles Oook, 213 City Street, non-compliance with a violation of the prohibition law sentence, 90 day sentence made active. Oook was also given a four month’s active sentence on a charge of resisting arrest and a 90 day active sentence on an as sault on a female count. Ray H. Hollifield, 413 Baker Street, reckless driving, 30 days, suspended upon payment of a $10 fine and the costs of court and the conditions he not violate any North Carolina motor vehi cle laws for 30 days. Fred Lee Wright, Ridge Street, non-support, nol pressed. Gerald Lutz, Bessemer City, non-support, 9 months suspend ed upon payment of $10 weekly for support, and payment of the costs of court. Tra cy Street, affray, continued un til next Monday’s court session. George Ramsey, E. Gold Street, forcible trespass, four months suspended upon payment of a $25 fine and the condition he be of good behavior for six months and pay the costs of court. The case was appealed to Su perior Court and bond was se at $150. Submissions included: Hairve Junior Smith, Route 3, speeding and improper muffler, 60 days, suspended upon payment of a $5 fine and the costs of court. Clarence S. Plonk, Jr., Route 3, stop sign violation, 30 days, suspended upon payment of half the costs of court. Donald Wayne Champion, 504 Katherine Avenue, driving on the wrong side of the road, 30 days, suspended upon payment of half the costs of court. Michael Ross. Dallas, issuing a worthless check, 30 days, suspen ded upon payment of the costs of court and the check. Arthur B. Newton, Gastonia, improper passing, 30 days, sus pended upon payment of half the costs of court. Paul M.
