All too fre<iuently consumers buy what tlK.hr iK'ighbors have bought or what an oveily ag gressive salesman has sold them. Many expensive purchases are made on impulse with the buycf giving little or no thought to de veloping a list or priorities, It is not only i.-nportani to stretch your dollars hut to receive in ex change for them the goods and services you want anti n<ed most of all. A typical wage earner lives on a fairly fixeil income. Raises that do eonie along may keep pace with the rising cost of living or, at best, afford a slight rise in his standard of Jiving. However, few of us ever receive a lump sum of money large enough to enable us to purchase Everything We want. Therefore, it is wise to plan ahead for the future and to list those items which we desire most of all in the order of their priority. Typically, an immediate need may be an appliance or automo bile, In two or throe years a new home or Kuropeari vacation may , be something you will want to ! plan for. In ten or fifteen years, j a college education for the chil dren will be an expense that re- ^ quires an immediate and contin uous savings plan. A plea.sant re tirement. although in the distant future, is something that cannot be postponed until you reach sixty-five. j You may feel, at this i>t)int, that it takes al] your income to meet daily expense's and stay out of debt. You may also foe] that there is no way to cut tiown on expe'nses and save for those items you would like to have btit wliich seem so unobtainable. Be fore vou give up, make a list and study it. When you have decided that .vou want each item l)adly enough, you have accomplished your first step toward reaching , your goals. Now think al)oiit the items you purchased <liiring the past year. | Did you really need white side ; wall tires or an automatic can opener? Do the items on your list .seem more important? By establishing priorities, you can truly evaluate the "unnecessar- | ies." With priorities established .vou now have an incentive and the things .vou want are meaningful. It is easy to save, .ves, and even do without if there is a reason. Give yourself that rea son I If you have any questions on , how you can STRETTCH YOUR | DOLLARS more effectively, send them to me at the Institute for Financial Planning, Inc, P.O. Box 3176. Graml Central Station, New ■ York, N. Y. KKllT. I New Trends Seen In Men's Fashions Designers of men's clothin.g are making headlines this spring. There is no arlicle of apparel more adaptable or useful than the blazer. It can he dressed u]) with smart shirt and tie, dark gray flannel slacks and well- , shined black slioes, Or it can be ; dressed down with white or co- ; lorcd slacks, sport shirt, slip-on shoes. Mrs. Ruby -Miller, clothing spe cialist for the Agricultural Ex tension Service at N.C. State, says hats are the big fashion news for spring. More are being sold due to lighter and medium color tones and growing inter- I est in casual types of felt. Tile new spring versions fea ture' ligliter weights, lighter co lors, more novelty bands of lea- ‘ ther oi- braided effect to stress thecasiial look. Sport hats are gaining over caps due to the all-round brim protection. Sportswear hats in- I elude those made of madras, raw silk, madagascar cloth, nylon I mesh, and the "wet look" with lOoating impregnated in fabric providing rain resistant utility. j When selecting a hat, remem ber that the slender man should I pir k a narrow brim and tapered ■ crown; a heav.v man, a wider ' brim and full crown.
