MyeL Garden Time 3y M. E. GARDNER N. C. Slate University 'Perhaps the home gardener tan take thirrgs a little easier in Jan uary thany month in the year. This is a good time to catch up on your reading and to exam ine se^ and nursery catalogs in preparation lor your spring planting needs. Examine your own library and check on any new books that you wouhl like to add. Visit your public library and examine their stock of gar den ibooks. Don't neglect the old er books because there is a wealth of good reading in many of them. If you are not subscribing to one or more gardening maga zines, you might want to look around lor a good one. It should have ideas to help you in plan ning and planting. If you have house plants with large, smoothe leaves, philodtm- drons, dracaenas, palms, rubber plants, fatshedera and other simi- alrplants, you may wish to im prove the appearance of the leaves. You can do this by wash ing the leaves on both si.les v.ith a sponge dipped in soapy water and squeezed out. ■Plan your vegetable garden on paper. This is a real go(xl idea Ibecause you can have the variety you want and the (|uantity of each vegetable that you need to supply the family table. Visit your county extension office and ask lor a copy of “Garden .Man ual.” If he does not have one or if you live too far away to make contact, write me and I will have one sent to you. You will find it to be very useful. Prune fruit tr<?es, bunch grapes and deciduous and evergreen shrubs except the early flowering shrubs such as forsythia and spi- rea. Wait until after they bloom in the spring. The fruit trees iind grape vines should be pruned every year. The shrubs as need ed. Muscadine vines should have been pruned in last November or in December. However, if you have not already done your prun ing, I would do this ,ja.) as soon as possible. Keep fall planttd trees and shrubs well supplied with water when the ground supply of wat er 'gets low. This is very im portant if you expect survival and satisfactory growth of your plants. No matter how cold the weather gets, keep them watered except when the ground is froz en. Have your garden soli tested with special emphasis on lime and phosphate needs. If you know of shut-ins in your community, do something nice for them. You will be glad yoti did. Mrs. Greene Is Award Nominee Mrs. Yvonne T.
