It was the first con ference victory fer the Mountalneera, who dropped their opening Southwestern Conference match to Shelby two weeks ago. The Mountaineers lost only four games and Coach Ed Ouy noted that might poaslbly be a conference record. KM’S top-ranked Tim Riddle brushed off his op ponent, Tim Bridges, 6-0, 6- Olnonly 28 minutes. Kenny Boheler, Scott Summltt and John Reed also won their singles matches, 6-0, 60 and the teams of Kevin Morehead and Boheler and David Lynn and Chris Keeter did the same In doubles play. Coach Guy didn’t play Riddle, Reed or Rick Dea ton In doubles play and said he'd probably hold Riddle and Deaton out of action today when the Mountaineers travel to CherryvUle lor a SWC msdeh. “We didn’t have to try too hard,” noted Ouy. Hie Moimtalnettes, who were scheduled to go to Cherry vlUe yesterday, travel to Bums today and host Crest Monday. Ronda Shytles won her singles match 7-6, 6-8, and Roxanne Tate and Pat Durham copped their doubles match 6-8, 6-2 for the only KMHS victories Tuesday. But Watauga, which Is being regarded along with Shelby as one of the teams to beat In Northwest- Southwest Conference play, had some shaky moments before clinching the victory. KM'S number six singles player, Elizabeth McGUl, won her second set to tie her match with Jane Knight, suid KM’s number one doubles team of Sara Maner and Mercedes Smith won their second set to tie their match before Watauga regained the momentum and clinched the victory. “I have to give our girls a lot of praise," noted CXiach Ed Guy. “The girls that won, of course, played very well, but we had several others that played well even If they did lose. "Watauga has a real strong team and our girls played them well. They Just ran up against some better players.
