Page 8A—MIRROR-HERALD—Thursday, April 14, 1917 Bessemer City Here Friday South Point Hands KMHS 4-2 Loss after you see your doctor.. ■\ lAlUlL.'V. Kings Mountain High's baseballers suffered their first Southwestern Con ference Division One defeat Tuesday night at Lancaster Field, losing a 4-2 decision to unbeaten South Point. Hie victory gave South Point un disputed possession of first place In the division race. Phil Tate’s Raiders are now S-0 In the division and 8-0-1 overall. The Mountaineers, now 8-1, and 4-7; dropped Into second place. Karl Wltske, heretofore known mostly for his soccer-style kicking on the football field, slammed a two-run homer In the first Inning to put KMHS lef thander Steve Lancaster behind for the first time this year, and that lead looked like It would hold up for southpaw ;Scott Shope of the Raiders, who mowed the KM batters down rather easily for the first tour innings. But the Mountaineers finally got samethlng colnf tbslr way In the fifth and struck for two runs to tie the game at 2-aU. With one away, Tim Chapman gained life on a fielder's choice and later scored the first KM nm on an Infield single by Jimmy Hall. Hall tied the score on a bloop sln^e to light by David Ray Robinson, the only hit the Mountles had all night that went out of the Infield. But South Point’s Mitch Painter and Steve Moss clubbed back to back singles with one away In the sixth, and Painter scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly. The Raiders added an Insurance tally In the seventh on an error. Kings Mountain’s batteri', who carried a .297 team batting average Into the game, had their worst night of the year, getting only four hits. And, as already noted, only one of those hits went out of the Infield. Shope worked on a no-hltter until two away In the fourth, whan Scott Elha reached on an Infield hit. The only other hits off Shope were In the fifth, when Hall and Robinson singled to produce the only two KM runs. Shope tired In the seventh and after Tim Whitaker reached on an etror to lead off the inning. Coach Tate called cn righthander John Connor. Connor fsuined Chapman and plnch- hltter Alan Putnam, but walked Hall. Robinson beat out an Infield hit to load the bases, but Connor fanned Danny Bolin to end the gsune. In sharp contrast. South Point’s batters, who had collected only three hits In their last two ballgames, came to life and reached Lancaster and Ronnie Wilson for seven hits. WtUke led the way with 8-for-4, Including the first Inning homer and a seventh Inning double. Wilson, who had his longest stint of the year, pitched good baseball, especially with runners on base. The Raiders had luimers on base In every Inning. The Mountaineers committed four errors, with two of them leading to the Insurance tally In the seventh. But the other three South Point runs were earned. Both of KM’s runs off Shope were unearned.
