Gant Has His Eyes On Rookie Of The Year Tuesday, April 4, 1978—MIRROR-HERALD—Page 7 HARRISBURG, N. C. - Harry Gant, one of the moat popular and talented performers In short track racing, la setting hls sights on the 1979 Grand National Citicorp Rookie of the Year title and he’ll launch hls efforts In the upcoming May 28th World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speed way. The Taylorsville, N. C., athlete will drive a Banjo Matthews-built Oldsmoblle 442 owned by Virginia coal mining executive Kenny Childress In the rich 600- mller. It will be the first of five Winston CUp appear ances In '78 for Gant who readily admits that the new team's goal Is to win the 1979 rookie crown. Childress Indicated that the team may compete In all 30 Grand National races during Gant's bid for the lucrative Cltlcrop award. Gant, who holds the unique distinction of having been voted by the fans as the most populdr driver In both the Late Model Sportsman and Modified divisions of NASCAR last year, is no stranger to superspeedway competition. He has scored long-distance Modified wins here at Charlotte Motor Speedway and at Daytona. Childress, who main tains a racing operation in Kingsport, Term., Is also a proven wlrmer. Gant, Ironically, finished second In the fight for the LMS title In both 1976 and '77. "We’re going first class," Childers said, "both with the driver and with equipment. We won't show up for a race without having the capability of winning. When I started thinking about fielding a Grand National team Harry was the only driver I gave any serious con sideration to.
