Eirlc Zan Withrow and Janet Camille Hart are among some 4S North Carolina 4-H members who are being rewarded for outstanding project achievement this year. Hiey will compete with 4- H’ers throughout the United States this faU In dielr respective areas. Eric Zan Withrow won In the project area of Ex ploring the World of Plants and Solis, and Janet li g Camille Hart won In the project area of Leadership as state winners for 1978. For their awards In these projects will be a trip to the National 4-H Congress In Chicago, Illinois In November. Eric Is the 17 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Zan Withrow of Shelby, N. C. A Junior at Burns Senior High School In Lawndale, N. C. Withrow has been active In several school organizations. His major 4-H projects and Activities are: Plants and Solis, Forestry, Health, Junior Leadership and Gardening. Janet Camille Hart is the 17 year old daughter of Mrs. Eunice Hart of Bolling Springs, N. C. She Is a Junior at Crest Senior High School, and Is a member of the Beta and French Clubs, Quill and Scroll Honor Society, Future Teachers of America, and the Pagasus and Crestonian Staffs. She has been a 4-H member for 7 years and her major project are: Leadership, Electric, Oafts, Horticulture, and Safety. JANET HART COL,. ERIC WITHROW KMers Could Miss Out On Cash Income Col. Dallas R. Walker, director of Marine recruiting in the Sixth Marine Corps District, will visit Shelby May 4, to speak to a select group of Influential leaders in the fields of business, govern ment and education. The talk will provide an kWight into Marine Corps training as It relates to oommunlty leadership, juath unemployment and education. The Colonel's presen tation will Include a listing of Marine skills training which closely parallels the employment needs of Shelby. Colonel Walker holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Commerce degree from the University of Richmond and turn done doctorlal work at the University of Oklahoma. As the Director of the Sixth Marine Corps District, headquartered In Atlanta, Colonel Walker Is In charge of the recruiting effort In seven southeastern states (North and South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee). There could be many people in the Kings Mountain area who are missing out on much needed cash Income because they don’t know about the supplemental security Income (SSI) program, Kenneth Shelton, social security branch manager In Shelby said today. SSI, administered by social security, makes monthly cash payments to people In financial need who are 86 or over, or blind, or disabled. It makes no difference how old or young a person Is to receive SSI payments because of blindness or disability, Shelton con tinued. A person does not have to be destitute to receive SSI. An otherwise eligible person can own some property and have some other Income and still receive SSI payments. But, ttiere are limits to the amount of income and what can be owned, aielton emphasized. A person can have assets, what he or she owns, that count worth up to $1,500, $2,250 (or a couple, and still be eligible tor SSI. Not everything counts. A house the person lives In does not count as an asset, nor does an older car. Personal effects do not count. What does count are Items of value — bank or savings accounts,cash. Jewelry, other real estate, antiques, large Insurance policies (over $1,500), and similar Items. Not all Income counts. Generally, the first $20 of unearned Income In a month does not count. Above that, though the SSI payment Is reduced dollar tor dollar. The first $65 a month of earned Income does not count. Above that, the SSI payment Is reduced $1 (or each $2 of earnings. Living arrangements also can sJfect the amount of payment. A person liv ing In someone else's housenoia generally receives a reduced payment. The msuclmum Federal SSI payment Is $177.80 a month (or an Individual and $266.70. a month for a couple. A parents' Income and assets count In deciding If a child under 18, 21 If a student. Is eligible (or SSI. Anyone who knows of someone who might be eligible for SSI can help by suggesting that he or she check with the Shelby social security office. The people there will be glad to provide more detailed Information about SSI and to answer questions. The Shelby social security office Is located at 231 N. WILSON Funeral services for WlUlam Nelson (Bill) Wil son, 47, of Rt. 2 Bessemer C3ty, who died Wednesday night In Charlotte Memorial Hospital, were conducted Friday at 3 p. m. from Long Creek Presbyterian Church of which he was a member. His pastor. Rev. Allen Morrison, officiated at the rites, and Interment was In the church cemetery. Mr. Wilson was a dairy farmer and a veteran of the Korean War. He was the son of Mrs. Myrtle Long Wilson of Rt. 2, Bessemer City and the late Nelson Wilson. Surviving, In addition to his mother, are his wife, Mrs. Frances Bridges Wilson; three sons, Billy, Bobby and Benny Wilson, all of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Bridges of Bessemer City and Mrs. Sue Unnasch of Thorndale, Texas. SHELBY — Funeral rites for Robert Arm strong, 66, of 802 Logan St., brother of Mrs. Lillie Mae Parker of Kings Mountain, were conducted Sunday at 2:30 p. m. from Long Branch Baptist Church by Rev. B. F. Brewer, In terment following In the church cemetery. Mr. Armstrong died Tuesday in Cleveland Memorial Hospital. He was a native of York, S. C. and a retired Shelby city schools employe and a farmer. He was a member and deacon of Long Branrh Baptist Church and a member of Hopewell Masonic Lodge No. 12. Mutual Christian Burial Association and the Friendly Aid Society. He was a veteran of the U. S Army having served In World War II. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Frances Armstrong Sanders of Shelby; his wife; one foster son, one foster daughter, three sisters, and four grandchildren.
