May so, ie78-MIRROR-HERALD-Page "I guess I’m unique In that I was asked by Bruce Suddreth (now head pro at nearby Gaston Country Club) If I would like an as- ristant’s job. I was 21 years old at the time. "I had been giving a lot of thought about making golf my profession,” he went on. “I grew up In a mall town where there was not a whole lot of <9- portunlty and I was looking lor something I could do and get away.” Hayes won several high school and college cham pionships, sweeping the Northwestern 8-A Con ference prep crown in '68 and the North Carolina Community Colleges championship In ’68. He played high school golf at Watauga High near Boone and college golf at Wilkes Community College. He turned pro in early 1872 when Suddreth offered Um the assistant’s job at Blowing Rock. He served there from April to August ot ’72 and then moved with Suddreth to Gaston Country Club, where he stayed until April of ’78. He was head pro at Land Harbors in LlnvlUe until August of ’75 and served a* an assistant at Catawba Country Club in Hickory prior to taking the Kings Mountain job. Hayes sees a lot of ixmsI- blUtles at KMCC. "My main goal,” he says, "is to give our mem bers a full service golf club. I hope we can have a country club atmosphere where all the people can come out and participate. And I think Kings Moun tain Country Club can become the finest golf facility in Cleveland County.” Hayes says he Is "very fond of teaching golf and I take a very active Interest In the junior golfers.” He already has scheduled junior and women’s clinics In June and he is available at all times for private lessons. "As far as tourna ments,” he added, "I hope to promote the present tournaments a* much as I can and we’re working on an annual pro-am. I’d like for pros from the other area course* to come, in and see what good facilities we have.” Hayes plans to play In several tournaments hlm- 'self, including the North Carolina Open, Carolina* Open and several others. “I don't play as much tournament golf as I’d like,” he said, "but I’d Ilk* to compete In about six a year.” Comparing KMCC with the other private clubs he has served, Hayes says "I don’t foresee Kings Mountain being as large In membership as th* others, but as far as th* facilities It can be a* fins a club as any In th* area.” On* ot his Immediate goals 1* to find a horns her* and move his wife, Lynns, and 18 months old son Sherrill her*. "I’m just very thankful for th* opportunity to be head pro hers,” hs said, "and I hop* I can give th* people the job they dsserve.” m And looking over the goK course Riddle Finishes Third In Tennis Tournament Kings Mountain’s Tim Riddle finished in third place in the North Carolina High Schools Athletic Association teilnls tourna ment Wednesday and Thursday at Chapel Hill. The talented KMHS senior won straight set matches over Vic Taylor, 48 and 43, and Ken Whi taker, 48, and 44, before losing to Chapel HlU’s Phil Rayford 44, 7-6 and 48 in the semi-finals. Still, Riddle, last year’s Western N. C. High School* Activities Association rtiampion, had the best finish of any 4A player In the tournament and single- handedly scored more points (8) than any 4A school In the tournament. Riddle was seeded num ber three and Rayford number two. Rayford Is the top-ranked 16 year old In Norfii Carolina while Riddle Is the number two ranked 18 year old. Riddle, needless to say, was disappointed that he didn’t win the champlon- Milp which would have made him the only person In the history of North Chrollnaprep sports to win two state titles in two different associations. But he wasn’t disappointed in the way he played. "Tim really wanted it,” noted Coach Ed Guy of the Mountaineers, "but he can still be proud of his accom plishments. He lost out to an outstanding player. Tim certainly made as good a showing as anyone and with a little more luck and endurance could have won It. Lessons To Begin Beginner tennis lessons will begin June 19 at Deal Street Park. Three sessions are planned, June 18-80, July 10-31 and July 34-38. Classes will be held during th* morning hours only and all persons ags 10 or over are eligible to participate. There will be a Umlt of 10 person* per class on a first com* first asrv* basis. All Intsrested persons may sign up at the recreation department Fri., June 16 at 10 a m. Th* fee will be $16 and Is payable at registration. TIM RIDDLE "Anytime you go that far and play as close a match as he did against Ray- Jord,” Guy sidded, "anyone can win. The best tennis player in the world never went undefeated. "Tim showed a lot of maturity,” continued Guy. “I’ve seen a lot of players leave the court pouting and (flouting after losing a close match like that but Tim showed a lot of class. He's one of the most en joyable people I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with. "I wish we could have won it,” he went on, “but Tim gave it everything he had. He did the best any body from Kings Mountain has ever done and I’m reed proud of him.” ElVIBEimiTTC leASORILL BY ARKLA ONLY! _ $79® I Real charcoal flavor with ! no charcoal mess!
