Guest speaker Rick Sease, per- sonnel director of Union Car- bide, encouraged the initiates and other members of Gamma Beta Phi to meet the purposes of their honor society. Steven Stokely, president of the honor society, presided at the service. Winfred Walker, vice- president, introduced the speaker and made an- nouncements. Michael McNeill, North Carolina President of Gamma Beta Phi, conducted the induction of the new initiates. Doug Burch, North Carolina’s vice-president, presented the credentials. Buck Walker, Gam- ma Beta Phi associate advisor and instructor, led the invoca- tion and pronounced the benediction. Mrs. Barbara Taylor, Gamma Beta Phi ad- visor, presented special awards and installed the new officers: Carolyn Pruitt, president; Steve Wright, vice-president; Frances Hamrick, Corresponding Secretary; Gerri Sloan, Recor- “ding Secretary; Rose McNeilly, Luke Owens Wins Contest | Luke ‘Owens, a student at Twelve Oaks Academy, won first place on the state level in United Daughters of Con- federacy essay contest. Luke’s entry was “The Battle of Benton- ville.” A cash prize was given by the sponsor, The Cleveland Guards Chapter of Shelby. The award was made during Twelve Oaks Academy’s gradua- tion exercises, held Thursday night, May 27. Luke was also presented the music award for grades 4-8. Luke’s sister, Kien, won se- cond place in the Optimist Oratorical Contest, presented by the Shelby Optimist Club. She was given a pewter medal and a cash prize, and was recognized at graduation exercises. Luke and Kien are grand- children of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Owens and Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Thomasson of Kings Mountain. They live in Bessemer City with their parents, Joan and Jack Owens. Certificates of appreciation were presented to Mel Campos and Dr. Charles Reynolds, CTC audiovisual coordinators, and to retiring officers: Steven Stokely, Winfred Walker, Sandra Earls, Cindy Morrison, Shelia Lewis, Gerri Sloan, and Jeannine Allen. Howell, James William Wright, Jr., Nancy R. Kincaid and James C. Ross. Donna Blanton,. ( Robert L.'Smith, III, of Kings Mountain, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the N. C. Association of Insurance Agents. Mr. Smith is one of 50 students throughout North Carolina to receive this award for the 1982-83 school year. The B. F. These awards are presented annually by the Association’ to ‘students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement and the need for additional funds to continue their education. The Scholarship program received 233 applications this year. Mr. Smith graduated from Kings Mountain High School this year, and is entering UNC- CH this fall as a freshman.
