Party Honors Debs The pool at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Champion in Oak Grove was the setting for a swim party honoring five of the season’s debutants--Allison Champion, Sandra Cobb, Danna Scism, Anne Tate and Jill Yar- bro. Fourteen debs and their dates’ enjoyed swimming and water fun, after which a picnic of fried chicken, sandwiches, chips and other pickups, along with baskets of homemade desserts were served. The tables were covered with red and white cloths and long stem red roses were used as centerpieces. The party ended with a watermelon slicing. Each deb was given a wooden craft painted like a slice of melon with their name and the date on it. The honorees were presented a beach tee shirt. Hosting the party were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Champion; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cobb; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Scism; Mr. and Mrs. Al Tate; and Mr. and Mr, John Yarbro. George Sherrill, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church, was honored Tuesday night by the Kings Mountain Lion’s Club as Lion of the Year. Lion Sherrill received the coveted plaque as highlight of the 42nd annual Lions Club ladies night banquet at Holiday Inn. Making the presentation, Lion Johnny Reavis cited Sherrill for his leadership on various com- mittees, including the White Cane promotion, and work on membership. Rev. Stuart Ritchie, retired Presbyterian minister of Charlotte, entertained the group with a magician act, “The Great Ritchie, inviting audience par- ticipation. He was assisted by Lions Odus Smith, W.K. Mauney, Jr., Tim Gladden, and city commissioner Humes Houston. Former Lion Charles Blanton, son of the late C.D. Blanton, a charter member of the civic club, arranged the pro- gram and presented the speaker. Present as special guests were Mrs. J. Wilson Crawford and Mrs. C.D. Blanton, Sr., widows of charter members of the Lions Club. Neither Eloise Crawford of Helen Blanton has missed a club ladies’ night event in 44 years. Other guests were wives of Lions, City Commissioners Humes Houston, Jim Dickey and Curtis Gaffney and their wives, Mrs. Charles Blanton, Elizabeth Stewart, Mrs. J.H. Ar- thur, Ann Thomasson, Martha Jane Mauney, and Rev. and Mrs. Gerald Weeks. Lions were recognized for their 1981-82 fund raising efforts for the blind with White Cane pins.
