July 1, 1982 Carmet Announces Layoff The Kings Mountain economy took another dip last week when Carmet Industries of Kings Mountain announced a large layoff. The company did not release the number of employees laid off but did say the plant “is . operating with a skeleton crew.” The plant, which normally runs two shifts, is now operating only one. “It is a temporary move and will be guided by the economy,” a spokesman said.
