Legion Is Still Unbeaten American Legion scored two wins last week to remain undefeated in Dixie Youth Minor League baseball action at the Deal Street Park. The Legion defeated the Car- dinals 27-11 Monday night and edged Plonk Oil 12-10 Thursday. In other games last week, Op- timist outscored the Yankees 15-11 and the Vitamin Bees edg- ed Plonk 8-7 Monday, and the Optimist whipped the Cardinals 224 and the Vitamin Bees defeated the Yankees 9-5 Thurs- day. White collected four hits to lead the Legion over the Car- dinals Monday. Slycord’s single led Optimist over the Yankees. Reynolds had a single for the Yankees. Hollifield’s double led the Bees over Plonk. Brad Melton had a double and Jason Hughes a tri- ple for Plonk. Biddix had a triple and single to lead Optimist over the Car- dinals. White’s double led Legion over Plonk. Goforth and Burgess had singles for Plonk. Stout’s single led the Bees over the Yankees. Young and Ivey each had a single for the Y ankees, Women’s Softball Action Underway Women’s Softball League ac- tion is underway at City Stadium. ’ Games are played each Mon- day and Thursday at 6, 7 and 8 p.m. In games tonight, the Moun- taineers play Hank’s Steak House at 6 p.m., followed by Kinmont-Power Recreation and Hamricks-Mauney Hosiery. In games Monday, Power Rec will face Hank’s at 6 p.m, followed by Hamrick- Mountaineers and Mauney- Kinmont. Seawright Wins Fish Tourney | Mike Seawright” caught fish weighing 16 pounds and 15 ounces to win the Cleveland County Bass Club’s May tourna- ment last Saturday at Waterree. Jerry Osborne was second with a catch of 16 pounds, seven ounces. Keeter Hamrick was third with 15 pounds, six ounces. Seawright also caught the big- gest fish, a six-pound, five-ounce bass. Stoney Jackson of Kings Mountain birdied the first hole of a sudden death playoff to win second place over Tommy Stines of Dallas. Both finished regula- tion 36-hole 72-73-145. Jim Thornburg shot a 79-71-150 to win the champion- ship B flight. Bob Gordon was second with a 152 and Mal Brutko and Jim Lybrand tied for third at 153. Bill Sellers shot an 82-74— 156 to win the first flight. Scott Led- ford was second with a 159 and Don Wright was third at Lon, Dennis Hicks shot: 8679-165 to win the Seid flight. Jerry Ross shot a 167 to take second place and Jerome Grant fired a 172 to win third place. David Williams shot a 9487-181 to win the third flight. David Brinkley was se- cond with a 184 and David Melton and Marty Folding tied play with for third at 185. Proceeds from the tourna- ment will be used to furnish a college scholarship for a deserv- ing Kings Mountain High School student. The ncxt tournament at KMCC is the ninth annual Western Carolinas Invitational June 11-12. It will be a 36-hole, medal play tournament with players flighted after Saturday’s round. The anti- sandbag rule will be effect. Entry fee is $25 per player. ‘Entry forms may be obtained at Kings Mountain Country Club. The entry fee after 8 p.m. June 8 is $28. The first 80 entrants will be accepted. Starting times will be from Spprosimately 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. : Each player entered pefore the tournament will receive one free practice round during the week of June 4-10. Carts are $5 per player. KM Bowlers Win In National Tourney North Carolina bowlers won several first place awards in the 53rd National Duckpin Bowling Tournament last week at Rich- mond, Va. Dilling Heating of Kings Mountain won. the Class B championship with a 2080 score. John Dilling led the winners with a 417 set and Judy Hardy bowled a 407. : Mike’s Drive In, which includ- ed bowlers from Kings Moun- tain and Draper, won the first four places in the Class C com- petition. Claude and Cyde Case of Draper won the Men’s Doubles with a 1022 and Claude Case won the Men’s Singles with a 939 series. Virginia Jones of Draper won the Women’s Singles with a 589 series and teamed with Claude Case to win the Mixed Doubles with an 894 set. North Carolina bowlers par- ticipating in the event included Betty Hullender, Charity Tignor, John Dilling and Johnny. Dye, Hipp Teams Win Johnny Dye’s and Gerald Hipp’s teams were winners in Summer Mixed Bowling League action Tues., May 24 at the Dill- ing Heating Lanes. ~ Dye’s team won four games from John Dilling’s team. Dye led the winners with a 139 line and 353 set. Charity Tignor had a 127 line and 323 set and John Dilling added a 122 line and 337 set for the losers. Pat Herndon rolled a 118 line and 332 set to lead Hipp’s team to four win sover Betty Hullender. Mrs. Hullender led her bowlers with a 122 line and 326 set. BOOSTER'S CLUB The Kings Mountain High School Booster’s Club will hold an important meeting Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Barnes Auditorium. Officers for the 198384 school year will be elected. Thursday, June 2, 1983-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 78 Juniors Lose Two Kings Mountain’s American Legion Juniors dropped their first two Area Four games of the 1983 season Friday and Satur- day at Lancaster Field. They lost to Hickory 14-2 Fri- day night and to Burke County 114 Saturday. They were scheduled to travel to Forest Ci- ty Tuesday night and will play at Cherryville Thursday and Satur- day. They return home next Monday to face Forest City. Hickory scored three runs in the top of the first inning Friday night and never trailed. Kings Mountain came back to score a run in the bottom of the inning on an error and Vance Wilson’s double. Richie Gold led the KM hitting with three hits. Kings Mountain collected eight hits Saturday night but couldn’t stop the heavy Burke County bats. Jerry McDaniel relieved starter and loser Lavar Curry in the fifth inning and hurled one-hit ball over the final four frames. Todd Cloninger ana Tommy Henson had two hits each to lead Kings Mountain at the plate. Post 155 scored two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by McDaniel and added their final two runs in the seventh on a double by Quinton Rikard and singles by Tommy Batchler, Cloninger and Henson. Commercial Leader Commercial Shearing holds the lead in the Kings Mountain Industrial Softball League race with an 8-1 record.
