TT OS Ber EI Ee rs CERISE iI — — Mack Has Biggest Rushing Game Kings Mountain’s Kevin Mack had the biggest rushing day of his college career Satur- day night, but it wasn’t enough as Clemson’s Tigers fell to Boston College 31-16 in a game played on the Eagles’ home turf. The loss was Clemson’ first in 10 games. RE Mack, a 197-pound senior fullback who doesn’t carry the ball very often, picked up 92 yards in 11 carries. His 42-yard touchdown run in the first period gave the Tigers a 10-0 lead, but the Eagles took advan- tage of several Clemson mistakes in the second half to come from behind. ha Ee ee The 92-yard total was the best for Mack since he joined Coach Danny Ford’s team. He gained 1,585 yards his senior year at Kings Mountain High School and once gained 287 yards in a .game against R-S Central. His previous high was 55 yards in the ACC championship game against Maryland two years ago. Mack is used primarily as a blocking back at Clemson, but Coach Ford and several others say he’s one of the best “all- around” backs Clemson’s ever had. From Page 1-B hard to stop beating ourselves, yet we seem to manage to keep doing it.” Hicks said the Mounties did a poor job of blocking and tackl- ing. “We ask our players to get after the opposition and stay after them for three seconds, which we figure is the time it takes to run a good football play. We just didn’t get after them and stay after them,” he said. Hicks was pleased with the play of Kale Bagwell, who plays tight end and defensive end, and Dale Moore, who played both ways at tackle. They graded out the highest of any other players on the team. BIG WINNER - Eddie Parker, right, 17-year-old Kings Mountain resident, is all smiles as he displays the $100 check he won for winning last week's Herald football contest. His nine- year-old brother. Johnnie Caldwell, left, is all smiles too because he plans on getting some of that dough. Wave Beats Mounties returned in the second period. He finished with 81 yards in 19 carries. Guard Quinton Rikard hurt his ankle early in the second half and missed the rest of the game. Hicks is hopeful he'll be ready to play against East Gaston Friday. A doubtful starter for Friday is Eric Odems, a backup running back and linebacker, who hurt his knee in the Burns game. He has been held out of heavy con- tact since. The Mounties will face a very talented East Gaston team Fri- day. The Warriors, sporting a new wishbone attack, defeated Ashbrook 28-21 and South Point 20-10 in their first two outings. “They have the best team size and speed in the conference,” says Hicks. “They have a lot of talented people and are operating their new wishbone of- fense real well.” Quarterback Larry Wallace and running backs Chris Wright and Duncan Deal spark the East Gaston offense, which always puts a lot of points on the scoreboard. Coach Jerry Adams, a Kings Mountain native and former All- State lineman for the Moun- taineers, will no doubt have his team sky high for Friday’ en- counter. The Warriors appeared to have a victory under lock and key last year at Arrowhead Stadium before Curt Pressley and Tracy Johnson sparked a last-minute, 90-yard touchdown drive which produced a 20-14 Kings Mountain victory. Fearless From Page 1 Why not?” “That is the village doctor under the car.” The big game for area fans to keep an eye on this week will have East Gaston at Kings Mountain. Kings Mountain came back last year to drive 89 yards in the final two minutes and 12 seconds of the game to capture a 21-14 victory over the Warriors behind the running of Curt Pressley and Tracy Johnson. A two-point conversion decided the issue after East Gaston had held a 14-13 lead. Both teams are 1-0 in league play. East Gaston beat Ashbrook Aug. 26 and Kings Mountain lost to the Wave last week. Kings Mountain entered the game as the state’s 13th- ranked 3-A team in one poll. Look for the winner of this game to be in the thick of things right down to the wire. And I look for Friday’s game to go right down to the wire. And the prediction is for a 16-14 Warrior victory. South Point seeks to bounce back from its 20-10 loss to South Point at home against North Gaston. The Wildcats were bounced around by Chase last week, 20-0, but they’ve got a bet- ter team than that. This should be another good one. The prediction is for a 20-7 Red Raider win. And here’s how I see the other games in the area: Backsburg 26, Bessemer City 13; Cherryville 14, Mooresville 13; Shelby 30, Burns 6; Crest 20, East Rutherford 7; Chase 14, R-S Central 13.
