The festival had exhibits by local garden clubs, students and club + ~ members. Proceeds will be used toward a scholarship fund to - be awarded to a local student who will later represent the club in a district contest for the Sally Southall Cotton Scholarship at UNC-G. Prodigal To Be Shown A fast-paced, modern-day allegory, akin to the familiar Bi- ble story, “The Prodigal,” a * World Wide Pictures Presenta- tion, opens Friday November 4 at the Earl Owensby Theatre in Shelby. Set in comtemporary urban framework and intimately ex- amining the gradual spirtual and emotional breakdown of an American family as each member searches for his identity, “The Prodigal”, was filmed en- tirely .on location in Seattle and various other spectacular sites througout the - state of . Washington. Heading the outstanding cast are John Hammond, who por- trays the title role of the wayward son caught up in the ..netherword web of drugs and sex, was recently starred in the hit mini-series ‘The Blue and The Gray.” Award-winning ac- tress Hope Lange stars as his confused and bewildered mother; while noted Broadway CARROLL HENDERSON Revival Scheduled | Carroll L. Henderson Jr., pastor of Laurel Wood Baptist Church in Bessemer City, will be guest speaker for revival services November 6-11 at Oak View Baptist Church in Kings Moun- tain. Services will begin at 7 p.m. each night. Special singing will be presented and a nursery will be provided. The public is in- vited to attend. Rev. Henderson is an native of Lubbock, Tex., and moved to North Carolina at the age of six. He attended schools in Gaston County and gradauted from Hunter Huss High School in Gastonia in 1971. He attended the Carolina School of Broadcasting in 1972 and served seven years as a rock and roll disc jockey in North and South Carolina. = ° He was called into the ministry in 1978 and spent one year preaching at different chur- ches and meetings as an evangelist before going to the Laurel Wood Church. He was licensed as a Baptist minister in November of 1979 and was or- dained at Chapel Grove Baptist Church in February of 1980. He is a 1982 graduate of Gaston College with an Associate in Arts Degree in Ministry. He recently attended the Billy Graham School of Evangelism in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Tony Award winner, John Cullum, essays the role of his single-minded, career-consumed father. World Wide Pictures is the film organization of the Billy Graham Association, and the internationally-known evangelist has a cameo role in the picture. In commenting on the feature- length “The Prodigal,” producer Ken Wales stated, “This is both an entertainment and a message piece. Some people will be un- comforable when they see this film, as it strikes so close to home, paralleling so many of to- day’s family situations. But we believe that the cur- rent trend of the public’s will- ingness to examine its own cons- cience will place it on the ‘must see’ list of family entertainment.” “The Prodigal,” a World Wide Pictures Presentation, stars John Hammond, Hope Lange and John Cullum in the screenplay written and directed by James F. Collier. Morgan Brittany, lan Bannen, Joey Travolta, Sarah Rush, Gerry Gibson and Arliss Howard also star in the film pro- duced by Ken Wales with William F. Brown as executive producer. The Prodigal will be shown nightly at 7 and 9:15 and on Saturday and Sunday at these times: 2:30, 4:45, 7:00 and 9:15. Tickets may be purchased at the box office of E.O. Theatre at ' $3.50 adult and $2.00 children. Advance tickets may be purchas- ed at the Prodigal office at the First National Bank, South Branch, Shelby between 9 and 4 weekdays, from local church delegates, and at the Bible Book Store in Shelby at a discount rate of $3.00 for adults only. The dis- count rate applies only before November 2. ara -_m Ta Prayer Service Scheduled A Community Day of Prayer will be held Friday at noon at the Acension Lutheran Church in Shelby. Sponsored by the United Church Women of Cleveland County, everyone is invited to participate. Following the prayer service, a light lunch will served which consists of covered dishes and refreshments brought by the church members. Participating in the service will be Reverend Thomas and Mrs. Lucy Rightmyer of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer; Reverend R.E. DeVoe of Shiloh Baptist Church; Mrs. Kathryn Reynolds, Mrs. Virginia Raymer, Mrs. Sherry Morrison, Mrs. Mildred Elliott, and Mrs. Alma Alexander of John Knox Presbyterian; Ezra Bridges -of Ryburn Memorial Presbyterian; Mrs. Patricia Palmer of Wardell Chapel A.M .E. Zion; Mrs. Fran- cis Cline of Elizabeth Baptist; Mrs. Betty Lutz and Mrs. Stephanie Roberts of Bethel Baptist Church; Mrs. Ruth Wilkie, Mrs. Bernice Putnam, and Mrs. Helen Keeter of the Assension Lutheran Church. Music will be provided by organist, Velta Langins of the Asension Lutheran Church, and soloist, Helen Turpish of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. There will be no charge for the lunch. REVIVAL Revival services will be held November 9-13 at Eastside Bap- tist Church on York Road, Kings Mountain. Rev. Dale Thornburg, pastor of the church, will bring the messages at 7 p.m. nightly. Special music will be presented.
