December 15, 1983-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 7A Patriots Take 2nd Victory Kings Mountain Junior High’s wrestlers opened Western Conference action last Wednes- day with a 65-12 victory over West McDowell. The Patriots were scheduled to travel to Crest yesterday in a match that should determine the conference champion. Crest opened its conference season last week with a victory over Shelby. Coach Phil Weathers started seventh graders Allen Moore and Johnny Nation in his first two matches and both youngsters, who were wrestling for the first time, recorded pins. “They got us off to a real good start,” Weathers said. “We went on to record 10 pins. Roger Webb, Darren Shank, Danny Hamrick and Lew Dellinger all had outstanding matches. { 0 2 Photo by Gary Stewart QUICK PIN - Referee Don Pack gets down on mat to get a close look at the shoulders of West Lincoln's Mike Cagle as Kings Mountain's David Parker (right) records a quick first period “1 sult feel Tike “we ‘have’ 4 pin in Thursday night's wrestling match at the KMHS gym. The loss gives the Moun- taineers a 1-1 non-conference record. Coach Steve Moffitt takes his team to Shelby Satur- day for a tournament. Other teams entered are Shelby, West Lincoln, Gaffney, Burns, Crest, East Mecklenburg and St. Stephens. “Our guys are going to be go- ing after West Lincoln,” said Moffitt after Thursday’s loss. “We had a team meeting, and they want them real bad.” Kings Mountain led by 27-15 after David Parker of the Moun- taineers recorded a quick pin over West Lincoln’s Mike Cagle in the 155-pound match. But the Rebels won the last four matches Smith Returns Home From Page 6-A North Carolina,” Smith said following the game, “but I hope the people back in Kings Moun- tain don’t read the boxscore.” ; Smith is fitting in well with IMass Coach Ron Gerlufsen’s rebuilding plans. The first-year coach recruited Smith from Fork Union Prep School in Virginia and said he looks for a “brilliant career” from him at the school which turned out all-NBA star Julius Erving. “Carl’s doing all the things 1 wan a point guard to do for ” Gerlufsen said. “I’ve been Pe pleased with his playmaking skills and the way he’s always cool under pressure. We have a young ballclub with ‘only. one senior, one freshman (Smith), Smith was highly-recruited after leading Kings Mountain High to back-to-back Southwestern 3-A Conference titles in 1980-81 and 1981-82. Chances to play at Clemson and Wake Forest fell through and he decided to go to Fork Union for a year. “l decided on Massachusetts because the coach told me that if I came up there and did well I would probably start,” Smith said. He won the starting point position in fall practice. Smith, who is averaging 5.5 points per game, hit 2-of4 field goals and 2-of4 free throws for his six-point total Monday night. His biggest assist night came against Bentley, when he had 10. tion at Burns. by pins to keep their unbeaten record intact. “I felt hke we had as good a team as they did,” commented Moffitt. “There were a couple of matches that we didn’t win that we could have won. Overall, our ° $ isi guys wrestled pretty good. West Kod is probably the toughest team & we'll meet all year.” i After the Shelby tournament AY, Saturday, the Mountaineers will ge be idle until January 2, they open Southwestern Conference action at Burns. when 3-A SE THE RESULTS 98 - Lewis Huskey (KM) pin- ned Don Church; 105 - Jeff Lewis (WL) dec.
