Page 8A-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Thursday. December 15, 1983 Mounties Sweep Burns, Chase Here Friday Kings Mountain High’s basketballers swept a pair of thrillers from Burns in Southwestern 3-A Conference action Tuesday night at the KMHS gym. The Mountaineers held on for a high-scoring 83-77 victory while the girls went double over- time before pulling out a 4543 win on a last-second basket by Anita Ware. Both KM teams are 2-1 in SWC play heading into Friday’s twinbill here against Chase. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Chase but was re- scheduled because Chase is hav- ing difficulty with its scoreclock. The game originally scheduled between the two teams here on January 31 will be played at Chase. Kings Mountain’s girls, now 4-2 overall, had to come from behind in the fourth quarter to tie their game at 4141 and force an extra period with the Burns girls, who were trying to claim their first victory. The Lady Bulldogs led 4341 with just seconds remaining when Sonya McClain, who was the game’s top scorer with 24 points, scored and forced a second overtime. The Mountainettes controlled the tip in the second overtime and held the ball for a late shot. Ware grabbed a big rebound off a missed shot and put it back up for the winning points with one second remaining. McClain and Ware controlled the backboards for the winning KM girls with 16 and 13 re- bounds, respectively. Lisa In- gram had an excellent floor game with eight assists and four steals. The game see-sawed back and forth all night, with Burns leading 12-7 after the first quarter and Kings Mountain leading 23-20 at the half. The game was tied 31-31 heading in- to the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers led all the way against the Bulldogs in the nightcap, but Coach Larry Sipe’s club couldn’t find the Killer in- stinct to put the game away. Lavar Curry had a big night at the point position, scoring 15 points and dishing out 16 assists. He also grabbed eight rebounds to tie Larry Crocker and Arnold Jordan for game rebounding honors. Tyrone Grier and Greg Young contributed seven re- bounds apiece. Hullender Bowls 339 Betty Hullender rolled a 139 line and 339 set to lead her team to three wins over Helen Brackett in the Amazing Grace Bowling League Friday at Dill- ing Heating Lanes. Helen Brackett led the losers with a 97 line and 282 set. In another match, Betty Crawford’s team won thre of four from Ethel Tignor. Linda Joy had a 99 line and 270 set for the winners and Tignor had a 107 line and 297 set for the losers. Patriots Whip West From Page 7-A THE RESULTS (Prelims) Lynn Goddard (KM) dec. GREG YOUNG ....Hits 12 For Mounties “We had great balance on the boards,” Coach Sipe said. “I didn’t realize Curry had eight re- bounds, but he likes to get in there and mix it up. His big con- tribution was the 16 assists. Some of the passes he made were just beautiful.” Grier claimed game scoring honors with 28 points. Jordan added 12 to give the Moun- taineers three players in double figures. The Mountaineers led by 22-16 at the first quarter break, 41-31 at the half and 61-53 going into the fourth period. KMHS built a 10-point lead in the fourth period but Burns kept chipping away. “We just didn’t get settled down into a good halfcourt of- fense,” Sipe said. “We needed to make three or four good passes and look for the good shot, but it GIRLS GAME KM (45) - Ingram 4, Ware 4, McClain 24, Pettis 6, Boheler 1, Woods 6.
