3 | Thursday, February 9, 1984-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 3A Bucks, Spurs Share Youth League Lead The Bucks and Spurs are tied for the lead in the 14-16 year old Boys Club basketball race while the Lakers hold a slim half-game lead over the 76ers in the 10-13 year old league. 3 Mounties Beaten Tuesday East Rutherford hit 6 of 6 free throws in overtime to defeat Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers 82-80 Tuesday night in the East gym. East Rutherford’s girls knocked the Mountainettes out of a tie for fourth in the opener, 61-57. The Cavaliers’ victory moved them back into a tie for second place with the Mountaineers. Both clubs are now 10-5 in the Southwestern 3-A Conference. Kings Mountain hosts North -Gaston Friday, travels to Shelby Tuesday and hosts R-S Central February 17 in the final regular season game. Tyrone Grier’s jumper with one second left tied the score at 76-all and forced Tuesday’s over- time. Grier scored 15 of his 23 points in the fourth period as the Mounties fought back from a 61-45 deficit after three quarters. Lavar Curry added 16 points and Arnold Jordan and Denoris Wilson had 11 each for the Mountaineers. David McCoy led five double-digit scorers for the Cavaliers with 21 ponts. East Rutherford’s girls grabb- ed a 16-10 first quarter lead and never let up in upsetting the Mountainettes in the opener. The Lady Cavaliers led 33-27 at the half and 45-38 going into the fourth period. Anita Ware led the KM ladies with 17 points. Sonya McClain added 11 and Lisa Ingram and Doreen Pettus had 10 apiece. Pats Place In Event Five Kings Mountain Junior High wrestlers placed in the ninth annual Carolinas Open Tournament Saturday at Sullivan Junior High in Rock Hill, S.C. Over 150 wrestlers from 12 schools in North and South Carolina participated in the event. The host Sullivan team, which has won 118 matches in a row for a new national record, had the most individual cham- pions. Kings Mountain furnished two champions, including Dar- ren Schenck in the 123-pound division and Darren Hillman in the 136-pound class. Schenck won all four of his matches by pins and defeated Scott Osborne of Union, S.C., in the finals. Hillman also won all four of his matches by pins and defeated Tom Jones of Charlotte Country Day in the finals. Others. placing for Kings Mountain were Mike Sellers, who was third in the 116-pound division; Tony Parker; who was fourth in the 92-pound class; and Bradley Henderson, who was fifth in the 149-pound division. Others participating from Kings Mountain were Tommy Chapman, Lynn Goddard, David King and James Adams. “I was very pleased and really proud of the way our guys wrestled,” said Coach Phil Weathers. “There is always some of the best competition in the area in that tournament. I felt like it really helped give our guys some experience for next year.” In the 14-16 year old group, the Bucks and Spurs sport 6-5 records while the Celtics and Trail Blazers are close on their heels with 5-6 marks. In the 10-13 age group, the Lakers are 5-3, followed by the 76ers 54, Rockets 4-4, Hawks 4-5 and Bulls 4-5. The Lakers took over the top spot in the 10-13 year old group last Tuesday by defeating previous leader, the 76ers, 64-48. Jamie Surratte led the winners Bagwell added 13. Alan Williams had 22 and Tony Williams 18 for the losers. In another game Tuesday, the Celtics outscored the Trail Blazers 89-70. Aubrey Hollifield, Ronnie Frazier and Teddy Wilson scored 18 points each for the winners. Dean Logan and Jerry Currence scored 21 each for the losers. The Trail Blazers knocked off the Bucks 71-67 Thursday. Tim Wright scored 21 points and Rich Scruggs 20 for the winners. Derik Jordan scored 41 and Scientists think that the house mouse originated in Asia. Charles McClain 18 for the losers. The Celtics scored their se- cond win of the week Thursday with a low-scoring 37-31 win over the Spurs. Don Adams scored 14 and Teddy Wilson 13 for the winners. Targe Wofford, Maury Williams and Mike Grier scored nine each for the losers. The Bulls edged the Hawks 54-53 in overtime Saturday as Julius Pagan scored 23 points and Rodrick McClain added 10. Robbie Edgerton led the Hawks with 19 and Jeff Ross added 12. In other games Saturday, the Bucks edged the Celtics 56-54 and the Spurs nipped the Trail Blazers 55-54. Jerry Jordan scored 18 points and Sam Smith added 12 to lead the Bucks. Ron- nie Frazier scored 18 and Don Adams 16 fo the Celtics. Travis Crocker’s 26 points led the Spurs and Mike Grier added 15. John Pettus had 17 and Jerry Cur- rence 10 for the Trail Blazers. In an exhibition game Satur- day, Kings Mountain defeated Highland 96-56 in a 14-16 year old game. Jerry Jordan led the KM team with 38 points and Derik Jordan and Aubrey Hollifield added 17 points each. Players of the Week for last week were Derik Jordan of the Bucks, who averaged 25 points per game, and Jamie Surratte of the Lakers, who averaged 26 points per game. One of Kings Mountain’s 14-16 year old teams will play Shelby Friday and three local teams will play in Concord Saturday.
