Thursday. March 22, 1984-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 3A Mrs. Jordan Campaigns On Husband’s Behalf From Page 1-A talk about her close knit family. As the May Primary nears the home stretch, the whole family is out on the campaign trail. Youngest daughter, Janie," stu- dent at N.C. State University, is campaigning with her father fulltime now. Robert Jordan, Jr. is a senior at State and will soon enter the family business, Jordan Lumber and Supply Co., Mt. Gilead, and daughter, Betsy (Mrs. Ward) Simmons, now of Charlotte, is a recent bride. The vivacious Mrs. Jordan said she loves to campaign for her husband and quickly adapted to a hectic schedule, which she has loved all her life. Raising a family of three children and staying active with them over 25 years of marriage, Mrs. Jordan said their oldest daughter was married eight days before Senator Jordan announc- ed for the lieutenant governor- ship. During the space of a few days, she helped one daughter pack to go to college, another daughter make wedding prepara- tions, a son packed to go to col- lege, and talked with her hus- band about his candidacy. Family and church are high priorities for the Jordans, accor- ding to Sarah who says her hus- band shares her concern for child advocacy. She said, if elected, her husband has pledged to work for a children’s legislative committee where child advocacy groups can come and prioritize their needs. “The kids come first with Bob”, she said. Mrs. Jordan said that her husband also wants to see the lieutenant governor’s position be a full time position. He is not in- terested in the office as a means to further his personal career. Besides serving as president and presiding officer of the Senate, the lieutenant governor also serves on the board of communi- ty colleges and state board of education, among others. Bob never goes back on a committ- ment he makes to a constituent and he never will,” she declared. Laura Carpenter Bingham, who works on the Jordan staff, daughter of Marion and Charlie Carpenter of Kings Mountain, echoed Mrs. Jordan’s remarks about Senator Jordan’s platform, noting that Jordan is a quiet leader who has gained the respect of many, including his colleagues in the N.C. Senate. “He is sensitive to the needs of others, whether they be children or adults”, said Mrs. Bingham. As Base Budget Chairman in the Senate, Senator Jordan has earn- ed high marks for his business acumen, according to Mrs. Bingham. Education, Job oppor- tunities and economic develop- ment are three other priorities the Senator stresses in his cam- paign speeches across the state, said Mrs. Bingham. Jordan hopes to put his business background to good use when he is elected lieutenant governor, said Mrs. Bingham. Senator Jordan was a member of the first Board of Governors of the Greater University of N.C., which includes 17 bran- ches. President of a large and thriving business, the Jordan family-owned lumber plant grew from the smallest in Hoke Coun- ty to the largest in the Southeast. Long active in his community, Jordan served for 10 years on the Town Board, was a member Feb. 24th, Governor Jim Hunt and Senator and Mrs. Jordan were in Washington for the special ceremonies. The 40th medal in the Arlington memorial building is a gold and platinum Liberty Bell with the state of North Carolina superimposed in a three-dimensional design depic- ting land, sea and sky with a handmade ribbon. It is the only hand designed medal, said Mrs. Jordan, and simply memorializes those who have given their lives from North Carolina for our freedom. “Sarah’s initiative in seeing that something was done made us all proud”, said Mrs. Bingham. Mrs. Jordan said her father retired after many years with the service and when she entered the State’s Honors Room at Arl- ington and found no memorial to the men and women from North Carolina she came away determined to find out what could be done. She said she visited Arlington Cemetery in 1980 with a group of Methodist young people to place wreaths on the tomb of the unknown soldier. Marion and Charlie Carpenter, Dottie and Bob Southwell, Odis and Joann Smith and Fred Flowers, Cleveland County manager of the Jordan campaign, accom- panied Mrs. Jordan on her local visits. Penny Spangler accom- panied Mrs. Jordan and Mrs. Bingham to Gaston County and a tea was held in Lincolnton. \ of the county planning board for 10 years, and came up in the ranks of the educational system. He was on the Executive com- mittee of the Southeastern Education Board. He has served on the Board of Higher Educa- tion of the Methodist Church and Mrs. Jordan said that both she and her husband have long been active in the Methodist i church and are committed Chris- | tians. Daughter, Betsy was the first woman president of the N.C. Methodist Youth and their son also served as president of the state youth: organization. Although Mrs. Jordan likes to talk more about her husband, she has been a leader in the Methodist Conference for years. She served as dean of women for “The Junior High Thing”, chaired camping ministries and was a member of the board of education and of the youth con- ference committees.
