a NE ; Re agg The Lakers won three games last week to take over first place in the Kings Mountain Boys Club Summer Basketball League race. The Lakers are now 5-0, followed by the Hawks and Celtics at 3-2, the Rockets and Mavericks at 2-3 and the 76ers at 0-5. Joe McClain of the Lakers and John Hill of the Rockets were selected players of the week for last week. McClain averaged 24 points per game and Hill car- ried a 22-poinf’per game average. McClain scored 32 points and Brian Byers added 20 Tuesday to lead the Lakers to a 78-67 win over the 76ers. Jamie Surratte scored 24, Teddy Jefferies 15 and Demetrius Bess 14 for the losers. In other games Tuesday, the Celtics edged the Rockets 48-46 and the Hawks nipped the Mavericks 52-48. James Roberts scored 16, Julius Pagan 15 and Andre Bess 10 to lead the Celtics over the Rockets. John Hill scored 18 points and Darius Ross 14 for the losers. Shawn Smith and Jeff Ross scored 14 points each and Anthony Hill added 10 to lead the Hawks over he Mavericks. Robbie Edgerton had 22 and Tyrone Moore 12 for - the Mavericks. The Lakers edged the Rockets 55-51, the Hawks topped the Celtics 4540 and the Mavericks defeated the 76ers 64-58 in games played Saturday. Thirteen year old Stuart Spires of Kings Mountain placed third in the boys 13-14 year old 1600 meter run on July 12 at Athens Drive High School in Raleigh. Stuart’s time in the event was six minutes eight seconds. Competition came from nine different regions throughout the state. Stuart was the only participant from Kings Mountain and represented Cleveland County along with eighteen other participants from Shelby. Shelby Parks and Recreation sponsored the local competition. Stuart, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Millage Spires, is a rising eighth grader and is a member of the Kings Mountain Junior High track team.
