TE Ln me cn Dixie Stars Win District The Tryon Dixie Boys all-stars won the district tournament last week at Tryon to qualify for the state tournament, but dropped two of three games in the state event in Kannapolis. Tryon bowed out of the state tournament Tuesday night, los- ing a tough 2-1 decision to Col- umbus County. Tryon’s Monty Deaton hurled a two-hitter and struck out 13 batters, but lost the game on two unearned runs. Tryon collected four hits off Donald Curry of Columbus County. Bob Mantooth homered for the only Tryon run and Brent Bagwell added a dou- ble. Bagwell was the leading hit- ter for the Tryon all-stars hitting safely in all nine district and state tournament games. The local team suffered its first loss in the state tourney Monday night to Kannapolis, 30. Kale Thompson’s home run with one out in the third inning was all Scott Lowder needed to nail down the victory for Kan- napolis Monday. He limited the Tryon stars to just two hits, a se- cond inning single by Brent Bagwell and a third inning single by Marcus Scism. Greg Sellers handled the pit- ching duties for the Tryon stars. Tryon opened state tourna- ment play Saturday with a 2-0 victory over South Brunswick. Monty Deaton hurled a three- hitter,. walking just one and fan- ning five. Singles by Scism and Deaton gave Tryon a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and Bobby Mantooth homered in the fourth to round out the scoring. In second round action, Tryon defeated Columbus County 4-1 behind the three-hit pitching of Jeff Warlick. Warlick walked one and struck out seven. Tryon scored all four of its runs in the first inning on three walks and singles by Mantooth, Bagwell and Darren Huffman. Bagwell led the Tryon hitting with 2-for-3. > Columbus County scored its only run in the fourth on an er- ror and a single by McGlookton. Tryon defeated Dallas 8-1 last weekend in the championship game of the district tournament played at the Tryon field. Warlick went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits. Tryon broke the game open ear- ly with four runs in the second inning. Bagwell’s double and a home run by Sellers highlighted the rally. In semi-finals action, Tryon eliminated Bessemer City 15-0 as Deaton and Warlick combined for a perfect game. Deaton hurl- ed the first two innings and Warlick worked the final three. Tryon scored nine runs in the first inning, with Mantooth con- tributing two hits during the uprising. Deaton slammed a home run, Huffman had a dou- ble and Bagwell a single. Bagwell led the Tryon hitting with 3-for-3. Huffman, Kevin Bolin, Warlick and Mantooth had two hits each and Scism add- ed a home run. Tryon put Dallas in the loser’s bracket Thursday, 8-6. A three- run rally in the seventh, keyed by Scism’s homer, was the dif- ference. Deaton and Warlick shared pitching duties for the winners with Warlick hurling five inn- ings.
