PASTOR ST. MATTHEWS LUTHERAN CHURCH I have just gotten back from vacation. The Sunday before I left several parishoners express- ed their good wishes for my trip. “You deserve a rest” they en- couraged (my parishioners are generous souls). My wife was quick to back them up. She, too, assured me I deserved a break (but she is hardly impartial, and besides, she was going along). The clencher, though, was that I agreed...wholeheartedly....I deserved a good rest! Back now from my vacation and reflecting on this process I am struck by how hard we do seem to work sometimes, assur- ing ourselves that we really, tru- ly, honest to goodness do deserve the good things that come to us in life! If we are fortunate enough to earn a good living and wind up with something to show for our labor, we are quite sure that our success is well deserved. After all, we worked hard for what we . have. And certainly the media are quick to confirm us in our belief! Have you ever noticed that one of the primary motiva- tions in commercial advertising is its appeal to the legitimacy of the good life? “You deserve a break today” - “Doesn’t your skin deserve...” - Yes!, more ef- fort than we might suspect goes into making us believe in our own worthiness! Enough, as a matter of fact, to make you wonder why. Is our need for justification that great? Well, as it happens, the answer to that is yes! Have you ever thought how hard it might be to live with all of the bounty we enjoy if you were constantly confronted with the realization that all around the world there are people who work considerably harder than you do, whose children are starv- ing to death? That could certain- ly take some of the savor out of the steak, couldn’t it?....some of the happiness out of the hot tub? It is important for us to believe that we deserve what we have...because the alternative might be guilt and no one likes to live with guilt. Guilt is painful. Worse than that it is warping. It is easy to hate people and things that make you feel guilty. And so, for our own peace of mind and the welfare of others, we convince ourselves that we “deserve”. After all, isn’t it better to pity all of those unfortunate people who haven’t got what it takes than to have to fear them because by luck we have what they more nearly deserve? Yes, all of our effort convincing ourselves that we “deserve” is our way of avoiding guilt, which is certainly understandable! Unfortunately, though, our ef- fort is a two-edged sword, for even while it protects us from guilt, which is uncomfortable, it Revival The singing group “Born Again” will lead revival services Friday through Sunday at the First Assembly of God, 105 Waco Road, Kings Mountain. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. Rev. Elwood Barnes, pastor, invites the public to attend. GOSPEL SING Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church will hold the regular fifth Sunday night Gospel Sing Sunday night, July 29th, at 7 p.m. featuring The Chapelettes. Rev. Mitchell Pruitt, pastor, and members invite the public to at- tend. PONTIAC—CADILLAC—BUICK —New And Used— —Special Prices— Shelby, N.C. 487-6364 Jake's CUSTOM PICTURE FRAMES JACOB A. DIXON “205 N. Sims Street Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086 Phone: 704-739-4238 a REV. HARWOOD SMITH also prevents us from knowing the liberating experience of gratitude. As long as we are getting only what we “deserve” God is no 4 more for us than a God of simple justice; a God of law (since justice is based on law) and therefore a God to be obeyed (to the minimal degree necessary) and feared (like the goblin; he’s there to get you if you don’t watch out). With such a concept of God, who isn’t really much bigger than we are, is it any wonder that we don’t find him very ex- citing or that our righteousness is so often ‘self’ righteousnes? It is not until we can see our blessings for what they are, the reception of wholly unwarranted grace to be received with hearts full of gratitude and thanksgiv- ing, that we begin to know the freedom of being loved by a God who is much, much bigger than we are...a God whose love we can grow in; a God we can get excited about; a God we can share as, with joy and generosi- ty, we pass along his love for us ° and his gifts to us!
