John Kilgo, is joining the rapidly expanding enterprises of Jefferson-Pilot Broadcasting Company and its Jefferson-Pilot Teleproductions. The veteran newspaper col- umnistditor and radio per- sonality will be involved in sports and other broadcast related activities with his initial assignment as host of the weekly television shows produced for a statewide network for UNC Basketball Coach Dean Smith and UNC Football Coach Dick Crum. JPT General Manager, Bailey Dwiggins, described the Kilgo appointment as, “an exciting op- portunity to utilize the talents of gn excellent on-air com- nicator who also is an expert observer of athletics in this area over many years.” For the past three years, Kilgo has produced both a newspaper and a syn- dicated radio show devoted to that athletic program of UNC. The addition of Kilgo is the latest of Jefferson-Pilot Teleproductions’ steps toward becoming a major part of the broadcasting sports scene, following close on the heels of the announcement of a live ACC Football Regional Television Network this fall. JPT also is a partner with Raycom Sports in the venture which produces ACC Basketball for television along with other Conference events. WBT/WBCY General Manager, Bill Jennings, says plays are also being formulated for his stations to originate radio shows featuring the UNC coaches with Kilgo as the pro- ducer and host, which Jennings describes as, “an important new dimension to our long-time association with UNC sports through play-by-play broadcasts.” While Kilgo’s immediate role will be primarily related to the sports programs, JPBC Ex- ecutive Vice President, Jim Babb, says he will be available for other broadcasting assignments in the company. And WBTV General Manager, Cullie Tarleton, says of Kilgo’s - move, “John has always been a challenging and provocative observer of current events, and we look forward to having access to his talents.” Kilgo is a Charlotte native whose print and broadcast work have always reflected the flavor of his intimate knowledge and keen interest in both politics and sports in the Carolinas. He graduated from Central High School, Charlotte College, and the University of North Carolina. His journalistic career started at The Charlotte News in 1956 and he became City Hall reporter and a featured colum- nist before joining Davidson Col- lege as Sports Information Direc- tor during the highly successful basketball years of Left Driesell’s leadership. The ' opportunity to further broaden his communicating skills in the media lured Kilgo to head the news operations of WAYS-WROQ in 1967, and he eventually became editor and columnist of the co-owned Charlotte Weekly newspapers. During that time, he handled radio play-by-play for UNC- Charlotte basketball for seven years. Babb said in commenting on Kilgo’s professional background, “based on my acquaintance with John going back to high school days, he is a spirited individual who speaks his mind. He has deep roots in the community, a thorough knowledge and understanding of the issues, which combined with his own unique style makes him a very popular communicator.” Kilgo will begin his new role with Jefferson-Pilot Broad- casting in August.
