Tailback Eric Odems gave the THE END! ~ (Til Next Year), » Odell, Warlick Make Regional Tournament Kings Mountain High's doubles team of Leigh Ann Odell and Robin Warlick finished se- cond in the Sectional Tennis Tournament last week at Shelby Southwestern 3-A Conference and KMHS in the Western Regionals beginning today in Hickory. : Odell and Warlick lost the Sec- tionals championship match to Morgan and Morgan from R-S Central, 7-5, 7-6, but pulled the upset of the tournament in the semi-finals when they knocked off the unbeaten and top-seeded team of Patterson and Bynum of East Lincoln, who took a 17-0 record into the match. The lead grew to 150 with 7:11 remaining in the third ‘quarter when Chip Caldwell kicked a 33-yard field goal after a KM drive to the R-S four was pushed back by penalties. Quarterback Tim Burns of the - Hilltoppers then took charge of the game and scored three times to give the visitors the victory and hand the Mountaineers a winless season on their home field. : Burns scored from six yards out with 42 seconds remaining in the third period to cut the KM lead to 15-6. After the Hilltoppers recovered a KM fumble at the Mountaineer 38 midway of the fourth quarter, Burns engineered a touchdown drive which ended on his four-yard run. The winning score was set up when the’ R-S defense took ad- vantage of a bad snap from center on a KM punt with 2:07 ‘to play. The Hilltoppers took over at the KM 31. That’s All He Wrote By FEARLESS After one of my more mediocre seasons, I’m having a fitting windup to my season. I’m getting the guillotine! HELP! That’s fellow worker Tom Moore with the rope. This is my swan song; it’s been fun; but I’m running out of jokes; and all but a select few of the teams are winding up their seasons this week. My record was 6-2 last week, giving me a 51-21 mark for the _ season. Nothing to write home about. A long-haired boy was trying to get into a swim club but was stopped by the owner, who tried to explain that for health reasons from using the pool. “Get a haircut and you're welcome,” said the owner. “Some: of history’s greatest men had long hair,” said the young man, WINS IN SECTIONALS - Chris Huffstetler teamed with Patti McGinnis to score a first round victory in last week's Sectional Tennis Tournament in Shelby. Leigh Anne Odell and Robin Warlick of KM qualified for the Western Regionals this week in Hickory. long-haired boys were prohibited “Those are the rules.” “Moses had long hair.” “Moses can’t swim in our pool either.” A newspaper once carried an editorial which stated bluntly that half the city council were crooks. Under penalty of arrest unless he made a retraction, the editor issued the following retraction: “Half the city council aren’t crooks.” As they left the auditorium after a two-hour lecture on 19th century English poets, the wife exclaimed, “Didn’t it make your mind soar?” “Yes,” her husband agreed grimly, “and my rear end, too!” “Did you hear about the guy who had three wives in three months? The first two died of poisoned mushrooms.” “What happened to the third wife?” “She died from a blow on the head. She wouldn’t eat the mushrooms.” First reporter: “What shall I say about the peroxide blondes who made such a fuss at the ballgame?” Second reporter: “Just say the bleachers went wild.” Well, let’s see what we can do about picking the winners on the final night of the regular season. South Point is currently blow- ing the stars around in the sky. They’re 9-0, headed for the state 3-A division I playoffs, and close out their regular season at home Friday night against Chase. I predict South Point will have a 10-0 finish with a 27-6 win over the Trojans. East Gaston closes out its season at home Friday night against, Burns. It’s been a long year for the Warriors at 3-6, but I predict they’ll win their final game with a 20-14 victory over the Bulldogs. Kings Mountain meets Shelby in the “Battle of Buffalo Creek” tonight. No matter how it turns out, Shelby’ got the division II berth in the state 3-A playoffs sewed up. Prediction is fora 21-7 Shelby win. The big battle in Gastonia tonight has Hunter Huss playing at ‘Ashbrook. ; Hunter Huss: clinched a playoff berth last Friday with a win over South Caldwell. Ashbrook needs a minor miracle to make the playoffs after losing to East Burke. The Huskies have the “Mo,” momentum, and that will carry them past Ashbrook in the cross- town rivaly. I'll predict it 14-7, Hunter Huss. And here’s how I see the other games: East Rutherford 17, North Gaston 6; Crest 20, R-S Central 13; Lincolnton 22, West Iredell 13; Bessemer City 7, Bunker Hill 6; Cherryville 20, West Lincoln 16; Mooresville 21, East Lincoln 16. ; See you next fall, folks! Patriots Beaten 39-0 Kings Mountain Junior High’s football team fell to Shelby 39-0 in its final game of the season Thursday at Shelby. Coach John Bumgardner’s Patriots finished the season with a 2-5 record. Shelby won the Foothills Conference with a perfect 7-0 mark. Shelby ran up an 18-0 halftime advantage Thursday and continued to pour it on in the second half. Kings Mountain failed to pick up a first down in the first half Scrimmage The Kings Mountain High School Booster’s Club will spon- sor a college basketball scrim- mage between Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian Tuesday at the KMHS gym. ~The college game, which is scheduled to begin around 7:45 and had only three for the game. Monty Deaton led the KM rushing effort with 56 yards, followed by Martin Spencer with 38, Joe McClain 28 and Tim Goode 17. Coach Bumgardner cited Dallas Stacey, Goode, Deaton, Jody Champion and Mark Crawford for their defensive play. Bumgardner was assisted this year by Maurice Jamerson and Richard Ellison. Is Tuesday p.m., will be preceded by a KMHS black and gold game at 6 p.m. All tickets will be sold at the door. Proceeds will go to the Booster’s Club to aid the athletic - programs at KMHS.
