i . a TAA trier, - This Is Volunteer Week In KM District Schools Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes in the com- munity and assist in many locations in the community, including the public school system. At Central School this week on the occasion of National Volunteer Recognition Week April 22-26, the volunteers were presented flowers from the students. Central volunteers include Janell Droz, Mary Subler, Ann McDaniel, Debbie Mauney, W.A. Russell, George Lublanezki, Charles Mauney, Linda Rome, Ruby Alexander, Andrew Loveless, Jo Whetstine, Tom Trott, Dianna Dellinger, Tom Tate, Dwight Tessneer, Billy Wease and Gail Herndon. Students had high praise for the volunteers. Kim Deveney said of Andrew Loveless, ‘Mr. Loveless has helped me with my math and. Ruby Alexander said, “Working with small groups has been very rewarding. They respond very well and seem to appreciate time spent together.” Dwight Tessneer said, “Working with these students has brought back a lot of my school day memories. I also learned they are doing many things different than we did in school. I feel they are very fortunate and so was 1.” Tom Tate said, I have en- joyed working with the students this year. It remind- ed me of my teaching days. The students’ were very in- terested in my work and I en- joyed explaining it to them.” Mike Loveless said, ‘It has been exciting and a lot of fun to work with the wonderful sixth graders of Mrs. Wood's. Each student is unique and bright and interested in class activities. All are a delight to work with.” Volunteer coordinator at Central, Cindy Wood said ‘So many smiling faces behind those volunteer badges in our classrooms are a delight and we at Central are pleased to have so many willing and able people volunteering at Central School. In addition to individual volunteers the KM Rotary Club has provided many volunteers and deserve special recognition.” Said the teachers in whose classroom the volunteers serve; Mrs. Carol Wheeler, ‘I eagerly look forward to Mon- day mornings, because . McSwain of Kings Mountain is among 26 students who have been elected to membership in the Epsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Miss McSwain, a senior English major, is the daughter of Margaret B. McSwain of Route 6, Box 115. Kings Mountain. She is a graduate of Crest Senior High School. A dean’s list student, Miss McSwain has served as a university marshal and is a recipient of an Ethel Stephens Arnett Scholarship for academic achievement in English. The students were elected to Phi Beta Kappa on the basis of their high academic achievement in the liberal arts during their undergraduate years at UNC- G. Phi Beta Kappa was established in 1776 at the Col- lege of William and Mary to honor students with outstan- ding academic records. Since, then, it has become na- tiongl in scope. UNC-G is one of only five colleges and universities in North Carolina that has a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.
