This Is Math Week This week is National Math Week and at Central School math students in Cindy Wood's 6th Grade are putting the plus in their mathematics education with the help of numerous volunteers on cam- pus. On a recent visit to the classroom the students were working on calculators, measuring and using the bulletin board and using the computer and newspaper as mathematics education tools. How they use math in their jobs was explained to students during visits to the classroom Friday by Larry Wood, personnel manage- ment; Jerry Blanton, con- tractor; Glee Bridges, hard- wareman; Barry Hughes, fireman; Rick Bacon, taxes; Frank Leonard, surveyor, and Betty Hughes, Sears employee. Math students were also participating in a contest to find the most words worth ex- actly one dollar in a puzzle distributed system-wide. What do; the students. like MECHELLE CAMP said" “We have a project at the end of the nine weeks to reinforce what we learn during the nine weeks.” AMY BELL said, ‘We work for points, at the end of the nine weeks, we count them up then we have a point- a-thon. Last nine weeks, we worked for 115 points so we could go skating. ANGIE WHITAKER said, “Math is a fun subject that will help others in the future.” LISA DROZ said, ‘“Math is a subject that is very challenging for all.” LEE BLACK said, “We need to learn math because we need to know it.” ALETA CLARK said, MF OPEN HOUSE “Math is a subject that is very important.” JOY SHORT said, ‘‘Math is very exciting and is something we will always use.” KEVIN BESS said, ‘‘This year we have had brainteasers. The brainteasers help us learn math tests.” RIC LEWIS said, “Math is a subject that will be used all our lives.” MISTY WHETSTINE said, “Mrs. Wood has taught me that we will have te use math all through our lives.” REECE COCHRAN said, ‘Math is an important sub- ject and we will always use it. That’s why it’s so important.” NICOLE HOPPER said, “Math helps you with skills you will need in the future.” KEVIN MOSS said, “Math is the most important subject in school.” KIM DEVENEY said ‘Math is important to learn because when you get ready to get a job you, need the “education: » CHANDA EPPS said; ‘Math is my favorite subject because you learn informa- tion that you can use in your lifetime and I also like math because it comes easily to me. If there’s something that I don’t understand the teacher always explains it to me.”’ NICOLE HERNDON said, “In math I have alot about fractions and the metric system. When 1 first started fractions I didn’t understand. But now I do understand frac- tions.” ROBBIE WILSON said, “I like math alot because I understand it.
