KM Boys Club AAU Team Fifth In State Tournament The Kings Mountain Boys Club basketball team finish- ed fifth in the AAU State Tournament (Junior Olym- pics) Saturday at Greensboro. The KM team edged Greensboro 58-56 in the ‘open- ing round before falling to Winston-Salem 93-73 and Clemmons 57-46. Edwin Sherer, who made Honorable Mention All-State, scored 16 points and Denorris Wilson added 10 in the win over Greensboro. Travis Crocker scored 21 and Sherer 14 against Winston-Salem and Sherer had 12 and Lenny ‘Smith Wins U.S. Title Kings Mountain’s Tony Smith defeated Ron Woofin of Selma, Ala., Saturday in Macon, Ga., to win the U.S. Superwelterweight cham- pionship of full contact karate. Smith is the second U.S. champion trained at Eng School of Self Defense iu Kings Mountain. David “Rock” Humphries earlier won the middleweight title. Smith won eight of the 10 rounds ageinst the U.S. champion. “The entire fight was a fast-paced war,” said his trainer, Robert Eng. “We trained real hard for this fight and Tony got plenty of sparring in with other world- rated fighters in our gym like David ‘The Rock” Hum- phries and Bob ‘Buffalo’ Barnes.” Other fighters from Eng’s gym who came away with victories in Georgia were Robbie Stephens of KM, who defeated Bobby Melton of Warner Robbins, Ga., Tony Onley of KM who defeated Tim Miller of Macon, Ga., and Skip Birskovich of Grover, who defeated Robert Dodds of Macon, Ga., in a close decision. Bob ‘‘Buffalo’” Barnes of Kings Mountain defeated Perry Baston of Carrolton, Ga., in the third round to win the North Caroina heavyweight title. Patriots Knock Off West Kings Mountain Junior High's baseballers handed West McDowell its first loss of the season Monday and forced a three-way tie for first place in the Western Junior High Athletic Associa- tion. The Patriots, now 4-1 in the league and 5- 1 overall, are now tied for first place with West and Crest. The Patriots host Cr / 4 Aided: a four Patriot er- rors and two hits, the visitors grabbed a 5-0 lead after two innings. Kings Mountain bat- tled back to take a 8-6 lead after five innings. After West regained the lead at 9-8, the Patriots scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to win. Monty Deaton, the third Patriot hurler, was the win- ner. He came on in the sixth, gave up just one hit and fann- ed four. Todd McDaniel started and was relieved in the fourth by Chris Plonk. Deaton, Kevin Bolin and Jody Champion led the KM hitting with two hits each. Champion doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. After a passed ball, Adams reached on an error and Bolin singled to score Champion. Moss singl- ed home Adams for an 8-6 edge. Two errors, a passed ball and for West in the top of the sixth and the Pats were behind again, 9-8. In the bottom of the sixth, Brent Bagwell walked and Deaton singled. Greene reached on a fielder’s choice to score Bagwell and tie the game at 9-all, and Greene scored the winning run on Champion’s double. Pats Edge East Kings Mountain Junior High’s baseballers struck for two runs in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to score a come from behind 8-6 victory over East McDowell in a Western Association game Thursday in Marion. Monty Deaton came on in the fourth inning to pick up the win in relief of seventh grader Chad Plonk. Deaton pitched no-hit ball the rest of the way and struck out eight. Kings Mountain led 3-2 in the fourth when East McDowell took advantage of a walk, three KM errors and a base hit to take a 5-3 lead. In the fifth, the Patriots tied it at 5-5 as Daren Schen- ck walked, David Ayscue reached on an error, Brent Bagwell doubled and Deaton hit a sacrifice fly. Kings Mountain grabbed a 7-5 lead in the sixth. Timmy Adams walked, Kevin Bolin singled, and the runners ad- vanced to second and third on a passed ball. Schenck singl- ed to drive in both runners. The Patriots added an in- surance tally in the seventh. Deaton led off with a single, stole second, moved to third . on an infield out and scared on a single by Jody Cham- pion. Kings Mountain held the ball and scored the winning basket with two seconds left. Kings Mountain battled strong against a powerful Winston-Salem team which featured a front line of 68”, 6’7’ and 6’6’’. KM trailed by only 37-34 at the half and 54-50 after three periods but Winston-Salem’s size made the difference in the stretch. “The team gave a good ac- count,” said Coach Danny McDowell. ‘It was a good ex- perience to play against ma- jor college prospects. We were real pleased with the play of Edwin Sherer, Sam Smith, Lenny Rayford and Travis Crocker.
