Kings Mountain High's baseballers dropped three games during the past week, losing to North Gaston 5-4 in eight innings Wednesday, to Shelby 11-5 Thursday and to Crest 11-1 Tuesday. The Mountaineers travel to South Point Friday night and return home Tuesday night to host East Gaston in the final game of the season. The Mountaineers had two of their best hitting nights of the season against North Gaston and Shelby but errors and bad breaks led to their downfall. Against the Wildcats Wednesday, the Mounties had a 4-2 lead in the fifth inn- ing when KM’s Maury Williams apparently scored to make it 5-2 but was called out for failing to tag third base. The Mountaineers col- lected 12 hits, including two each by Jarvis Young, Williams, Charles Proctor and Paul Neisler. Dale Postell, Thomas Breakfield, Keefer Ballew and Ritchie Gold added one hit each. Neisler started for the Mounties and was relieved in the sixth by Rusty Bumgard- ner, who was charged with the loss. The Mountaineers commit- ted their ouly error of the game in the bottom of the eighth. The Wildcats also took advantage of a walk and a fielder’s choice to put run- ners on first and third and then Sanders knocked in the winning run with a single. Fk The Mountaineers left the bases loaded twice in Thurs- day’s loss to Shelby. The Lions later blew the game open with four runs in the sixth inning. Shelby grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the second and led 7-5 after five innings. The Mountaineers col- lected 12 hits with Proctor, Young and Williams getting two each. Dock Boheler had a two-run double, Bumgardner added a double and one RBI and Postell had an RBI single. Gold and Breakfield also had singles for the Moun- ties. : Kings Mountain aided the Shelby cause by committing five errors. Bumgardner started on the mound and was charged with the loss. He was relieved in the sixth by Young. Clevemont And Reeves Lead Industrial League Clevemont and Reeves each posted two victories last week as the Kings Mountain Men’s Industrial Softball season got underway at Deal Street Park. Clevemont defeated Thermo-Welco 12-7 and Kin- mont 15-3. Reeves whipped Combustion Engineering 24-9 and Park Yarn 12-2. In other action last week. Softballers Win Pair, Host Warriors Monday Kings Mountain High's girls softball team won two games last week to run their record to 114 overall and 4-0 in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern 3-A Conference. The Mountaineers close out regular season play during , the next week. Today, they travel to South Point for a doubleheader and Monday they host East Gaston in a twinbill beginning at 3:30. The top two teams from each division advance to the SWC playoffs. Last Thursday, Coach Bruce Clark’s ladies bombed Shelby 25-3. Leigh Anne Odell and Debbie Nance had four hits each and Yvette Moore added three. Monday afternoon, Mountainettes edged Crest 7-5. Odell, Edie Herndon and Regina Brown led the way with two hits each. “We’ve started hitting the ball real well and are playing good defense,” said Coach Clark. “We feel like things are going to go well for us.” KM Runners Winners In BC 10-K Event John Foster, Jeff Cloninger and Debbie Smith of Kings Mountain finished first in their divisions in the 10-K run during Saturday’s Recrea- tion Day activities in Bessemer City. Cloninger won the men’s 19-29 year old division in 36.15. His time was also the best overall. Foster won the 18-under ‘age group in 39.33, and was third overall. Smith won the women’s division in 54.59. Slowpitch Tourney Set There will be a slowpitch softball tournament May 3-5 at Deal Street Park. The event is open to all Class D and church league teams. Buddie Rice led the winners with 3-for-4 and Terry Bullock led the losers with 3-for-4. Paul Houser had three hits for Clevemont in its win over Kinmont. Tyree Goode was 2-for-2 for Kin- mont. Blanton was 3-for-3 and also hurled the victory to lead Reeves over Combustion. Ronald Crawford was 2-for-3 for the losers. Blanton again hurled the win and J.D. Clark: went 4-for-4 to lead Reeves over Park Yarn. Lamar Flet- cher was 1-for-2 for Park Yarn. : : Pearson was 4-for-5 to lead Kinmont over Park Yarn. McLeymore was 3-for-4 for the losers. Bolten hurled the win and also had two hits to lead Spec- trum over Thermo-Welco. Walker was 1-for-2 for the losers.
