Proffitt Days a homemade banjo and dulcimer, sings, and tells “Jack” tales and other folk legends. Tradi- tional music is a part of Frank’s heritage. His ancestors were among the first settlers of the Ap- palachian area. These pioneers started making fretless banjos and dulcimers to provide entertainment for themselves and their families. The talents for wood-craft and making music have been passed down on both sides of Frank’s family for generations. “It’s not the kind of art that is gained by education in schools. Much of it is handed down by oral tradition - a heritage passed down from generation to generation. It is in the heart, an inherited talent,” explained the ge- Mr. and Mrs. nuine mountain musician. Frank is the son of the late Frank Proffitt, Sr., who gain- ed national recognition as one of his century’s outstanding folk artists. It was the senior Frank’s version of the ballad “Tom Dooley’’ that folklorist Frank Warner collected in 1938 and that became an overnight hit when the. Kingston Trio sang it on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1958. The tremendous appeal of “Tom Dooley’ contributed to the great folk music revival of the early ‘60’s. Following his debut at Berea College with his father, Frank, Jr. began a career of public performances. He has appeared in numerous folk festivals, in- cluding: Newport Folk Festival, 1969; North Carolina ‘Bicentennial Folk Festival, 1976; National Storytelling Festival, Jonesborough, Tennessee, 1980 and 1982; World’s Fair, 1982, Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife, 1983; Sun- day in the Park, New York City, 1984, sponsored jointly by the Poh of Queens and Carnegie Hall. ; John Grant Announce Birth Of Son: Mr. and Mrs. John Grant of Kings Mountain announce the arrival of their son, Steven Edward Lincoln Grant, March 26, Cleveland Memorial Hospital, Shelby.
