Branch Banking and Trust Company’s (BB&T) Trust In- vestment. Department pro- duced the highest return on its Employee Benefit Equity Fund of any bank-managed investment fund in eight southeastern states for the latest quarter ending February, 1986, according to a report on common stock funds by CDA Investment Technologies, Inc., a com- pany that monitors invest- ment performance. The states surveyed were; Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Ten- nessee and Alabama. BB&T’s 17.3% return on in- vestment in the latest quarter was sufficient to earn the Wilson-based bank a place in the top 5% of the 276 invest- ment funds across the coun- try which were analyzed by CDA. “These results are par- ticularly gratifying to us, because they indicate that we are providing superior ser- vice for our customers,” W. Ray Long, executive vice president and manager of BB&T’s Trust Division, said. “We were ranked in the top 25% in the country for 1985, and we intend to make ever effort to maintain our high standing in the investment community.” BB&T’s Employee Benefit Poult Fund consists of con- tributions from various pen- sion and profit sharing plans managed by BB&T’s Trust Department. As the contribu- tions are received, they are invested to provide additional revenue for the plans. Ketner, chairman of Food Lion, Inc., the “best executive’”” among leaders in the retail/food chain industry. Ketner, who founded the Salisbury-based super- market chain in 1957, receiv- ed the publication’s gold award for ‘judicious expan- sion, stringent cost control and selective formating” in building... what has been described as ‘‘America’s fastest growing food chain” by Forbes’ magazine. In 1968, Ketner made a ma- jor impact on food retailing in North Carolina when he lowered 3,000 grocery prices and calculated a formula of volume sales which would provide customers with lower food bills and also a profit for the company. That pricing philosophy remains intact to- day and is the major reason the company has grown from 5 stores in 1968 to 332 stores in six southeastern states today. The Transcript reports Food Lion’s ‘‘expense ratio to sales is the best in. the business along with attaining high returns on equity, strong net profit margin, high return on assets relative to the in- dustry as a whole. They are taking market shares away from their competitors.” Karate Class Entertains Kings Mountain Kiwanians The Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club enjoyed a resentation by the orange elt Karate class from North School.
