G-W Theatre To Present ‘Toy Shop’ This Week BOILING SPRINGS - Gardner-Webb’s Opera Theatre, under the direction of Dr. Terry Fern, will pre- sent two public performances of ‘‘The Toy Shop,’ a chamber opera by Seymour Barab, Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. in the Dover Theatre of the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. Admis- sion is $2 per person. Although “The Toy Shop” is a children’s opera, its story line will appeal to adults as well as children. The opera is performed in English. A special performance will be given Wed., Nov. 4 for school children from the Cleveland County and Shelby City schools. Now in its 11th year, this student day at the opera is designed to in- troduce students and their parents to the medium -of opera. Bobby Beale, a sacred music major from Boiling Springs, will be featured in the role of Toymaker. other performers will include Deb- bie Tutterow of Kannapolis, and Doug Penniger of Charlotte as the dolls, Pauline and Paul. Micah Saylor of Charlotte will ap- pear as the villian who at- tempts to steal the toymaker’s dolls. Fern is in his fourth year as director of Gardner-Webb’s Opera Theatre. He has per- formed in such operas as “The Marriage of Figaro’, and ‘Fiddler on the Roof” and starred as Captain Von Trapp in a western New York production of ‘“The Sound of Music”.
