Meeks KM’s Only Track Winner Kings Mountain’s Cliff Meeks was a double-winner in the Southwestern 3-A Conference track meet Thursday at Shelby High School. The senior standout won the 1,600 meter run in 4:45.83 minutes and the 3,200 meter run in 10:37.04. Shelby won the team title with 159 points, followed by East Rutherford 99%, R-S Central 76, South Point 61%, North Gaston 49, Kings Mountain 47, Chase 44 and Burns 4. | : Meeks was the only first place winner for the Mountaineers. Other Mountaineers placing were: _ Ron Ruffin, sixth in the long jump, 20’2”, : Wayne Brazzell, second in the shop put, 43’6’. Daniel Long, second in the pole vault, 11 feet even. Larry Stone, fifth in the pole vault, 10 feet even. Audia Spencer, sixth in the 110 meter hurdles. Anthony Hillman, third in the 200 meter run, 23.63 seconds. Kings Mountain athletes who met state qualifying standards during the regular season will go to T. C. Roberson High Saturday for the sectional meet. The top four finishers in each division there will advance to the Ta CLIFF MEEKS Western 3-A Regionals May 28 in Shelby. ; Fkk Kings Mountain’s girls track team finished fifth in the Southwestern 3-A Conference meet Friday at Shelby. The Lady Lions won the event with 152 points, followed by East Rutherford 117, Chase 71, North Gaston 55, Kings Mountain 49, R-S Central 47 and South Point 28. Kings Mountain failed to win an event. Adrienne Woods was second in the shot put with a JACKIE PLONK throw of 32’2 1/4 inches, and third in the discus with a throw of 77 feet, nine inches. Jackie Plonk of Kings Moun- tain was second in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 14:1.05 minutes. Kathy Krueger was fourth in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 6:47.88 minutes. Lisa Blanton finished second in the 800 meters in 2:48.72. Cheryl Perkins was fourth in the 300 hurdles in 54.81 seconds, fifth in the 100 hurdles in 18:79.6 seconds, and sixth in the 100 meters in 13.66 seconds. Broadwells Win Golf Event Mary Leigh and Ryan Broadwell fired a six-over-par 78 Saturday to win the Mother’s Day Adult/Child Golf Tourna- ment at Kings Mountain Country - Club. They won by four shots over Doris Cloninger and Matt Heavner, who shot an 82. Other scores included Sylvia Neisler and Rusty Bumgardner 83, Elaine Grigg and Phil Rob- bins 84, Brenda Sellers and John Van Dyke 85, Janet Tate and Ashley McGinnis 86 and Peggy Jackson and Robbie Wilson 87. Peggy Jackson and John Van Dyke won closest to the hole con- tests and Mrs. Jackson and Ashe- ly McGinnis won the longest drive contests. INVITATIONAL The 12th annual Western Carolinas Team Invitational Golf CONFERENCE CHAMPION - Kings Mountain Junior High’s Rob- bie Wilson fired a one-over-par 73 last week to win the Western N.C. MOUNTIES LOSE Kings Mountain High’s golfers failed to qualify for the state tournament in Monday’s Western Regional event at Apple Valley near Rutherfordton. The Mountaineers shot a 336 to tie for fifth place with East Rutherford. Only the top three . teams advance to the state event next week at Finley Golf Course ‘in Chapel Hill. T.C. Roberson won the event with a 302 score. Other teams ad- vancing were Swannanoa Owen with a 328 and Canton Pisgah with a 333. Burns finished fourth with a 334. The Mountaineers had won the Southwestern 3-A Conference the past two years and finished se- cond behind Roberson in last year’s regional. Low man for the Mountaineers Monday was Phil Robbins with an 82. Medalist was Travis Fore of Roberson with a 70. Widowmakers Bowling Champs The Widowmakers--alias the Hopefuls--won three straight games over Sally’s in a special bowloff Thursday night at Dilling Heating to claim the champion- ship in the Thursday Night Mixed Duckpin Bowling League. The Hopefuls, who recently changed their name, had won the first half title and Sally’s had claimed the second half crown. Allen Myers rolled a 135 line and 368 set and Linda Neely add- ed a 127-333 to lead the winners. Ken Bridges had a 108 line and Jerome Grant a 299 set for Sally’s. Fkk In Tuesday night action, Johnny Dye won three of four from John Dilling and Betty Hullender and Walter Mocanu split. Jack Barrett had a 136 line and 358 set and Dye added a 126-354 for Dye’s team. John Dilling had a 122 line and 356 set and Dot Mobley a 111-322 for the losers. Mocanu was the high scorer for the night, rolling a 141 line and 375 set. Lib Gault added a 123 line and 346 set for Mocanu’s group Robert Hullender had a 140-357 and Betty Hullender a 111-320 for Hullender’s team.
