Delegates from across the state attended that convention and voted against ratification of the Constitution because it did not in- clude a Bill of Rights. North Carolina didn’t ratify the Con- stitution until a second conven- tion in Fayetteville in 1789. Two hundred years ago citizens of Lincoln and Ruther- ford counties met to debate the ratification issues and elect delegates to the Hillsborough convention. (Cleveland County was formed from portions of Lin- coln and Rutherford in 1841). On June 23, the “We Want Freedom” program will feature a dramatic reenactment of a Federalist vs. Anti-Federalist debate of what might have been argued by the delegates preceding the Hillsborough con- vention. Local performers will present this debate reenactment written by Virginia Greene Depriest. Following the debate, Dr. Bobby Moss, former Limestone College history professor, will sum- marize arguments for and against ratification of the Con- stitution. The audience will be allowed to ask questions and will be asked to vote for or against the proposed Constitution. On June 24, the “We Want Freedom” program will; include a brief overview of the Constitu- tion by Dr. Gordon McKinney, Western Carolina University history professor and music by folklorist Marilyn McMinn/Mc- Credie, who will perform folk songs and folk tales from the 1775-1800 period. “We Want Freedom” is made possible by grants from the N.C. Humanities Council and the N.C. Commission on the Bicentennial of the Constitution.
