REE PSE A ~— i i Scholarship Is Started At Abbey BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey College officials have an- nounced the establishment of the Abbot Walter Coggin Scholarship in Philosophy. To be awarded to Belmont Ab- bey philosophy majors of sound moral character, the scholarship is named in honor of the Right Reverend Walter A. Coggin, long-time instructor in mathematics and philosophy at the college. Abbot Walter attended Bel- mont Abbey and holds an A.B. from St. Benedict College in At- chison, Kansas, and a Master’s and Ph.D. degree from the Catholic University of America. He entered the Benedictine Order at Belmont in 1936, was solemnly professed in 1940, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1943. Appointed Vicar-Coadutor at Belmont Abbey in 1956, Abbot Walter also became the college’s fifth president and served in that capacity until 1967. Chancellor of the College from 1957-1970, he was elected the third Abbot- Ordinary of Belmont Abbey Nullius in 1959.
