DUE WEST, S.C. Ten outstanding high school science students recently closed their three-week par- ticipation in the “RISE” program, ‘Research In'Science at Erskine,”’ by exhibiting their projects in com- puter interfacing and holography for parents and visitors. Janelle McCoy of Grover, N.C., a student at Kings Mountain High School, shows her computer interfacing project to (left to right) : Marguerite Jones of Greenville, Judy Mancino of Anderson, Jane Finley of Belton, and Jack Tender of Clemson, all teachers attending the Elementary Science Leadership Program at Erskine. The high school students from five states studied at Erskine College under Dr. William F. Junkin, physics professor, and Dr. Bright Lowry, chemistry professor. It was the eleventh summer that Dr. Junkin had conducted a pro- gram at Erskin featuring holography, amazing three-dimensional laser photography. The teachers were among 24 elementary school teachers participating in the ESLP program at Erskine June 15-July 1 and July 11-27. (Photo by Dick Haldeman) Canova, Suber On KM Hospital Board Donna Canova, president of Kings Mountain Hospital Aux- iliary, has been elected to a five- year term on the Hospital Board of Trustees, and Bob Suber has been re-elected to another five- year term. Mrs. Canova and her husband, Levy Canova, who is technical director of KMG Minerals Inc., moved to Kings Mountain from Orange Park, Fla, Prior to moving here, Mrs. Canova was active in public ser- vice. She began volunteering at Kings Mountain Hospital shortly after moving here. She is an ac- tive member of the Cleveland Literacy Council, Central United Methodist Church and the Kings Mountain Hospital Auxiliary. She has a B.A. in education from the University of Florida. In her new appointment, Mrs. Canova says she sees herself as a person who can “help the com- munity become aware of the many services Kings Mountain Hospital provides which are comparable to those of larger hospitals.” “It’s been exciting working with the dedicated staff at Kings Mountain Hospital, and I want to see the hospital grow and con- : tinue serving the public,” she said. i Mrs, Canova -gthers’ to volunteer because “‘as we serve. He is a Richard Greene, former prin- cipal in the Kings Mountain Schools, has been named Assis- tant Superintendent for Cur- riculum with the Buncombe County Schools. Greene came to Kings Moun- tain as principal of Park Grace School in 1968-69. He also served as principal at East, North, and Central Schools. From 1980-83 Greene worked with the Depart- ment of Public Instruction in Raleigh. During the 1983-84 school year Greene served as Assistant Principal at T.C. Roberson High School in Bun- combe County. From August of 1984 until he received his present assignment. Greene was Direc- tor of Curriculum and Staff Development for the Buncombe County Schools. Greene’s new responsibilities will include supervision of the curriculum staff, implementa- tion of the state Basic Education Plan, and other curriculum development activities. Bun- combe County Schools has a stu- dent population of 22,000 in its 38 schools. graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne Col- lege with a B.S. in chemistry and received an MS in textile Shemisiry from Clemson Univer- sity. Suber and his wife, Emily, and two sons, are members of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, where he is president of the Benevolent Foundation. He is president of Kings Mountain Country Club, a member of the Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club, and is one of the board of direc- tors of Kings Mountain Cor- porate Center. Suber said he feels the com- munity needs to ‘realize the good services the hospital has to offer. The hospital has a variety of doctors and good personnel, but the hospital needs support from the community,” he said. Hooper Joins KM Hospital Ken Hooper recently assumed the position of Director of Housekeeping at Kings Mountain Hospital. He said he appreciates the cooperation he has received from the entire staff, particular- ly the housekeeping staff and the other department heads.
