Obituaries Page 2A-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Wednesday, October 12, 1988 mo H.A. “HAG” GOFORTH H.A. “Hag” Goforth, 79, of Route 2, Kings Mountain, died Tuesday, at 5:15 p.m., at Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shelby. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late James Thomas and Ida Hamrick Goforth and was a retired textile employee and farmer. He was a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Barber Goforth; two sons, Lt. Comm. George T. Goforth, retired, of LaPalta, Md., and Richard A. Goforth of Midlothanin, Va; one daughter, Mrs. Sonyia Lovelace of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren; and one-great-great-grandchild. Graveside services will be con- ducted Thursday at 4 p.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery by the Rev. Lyn Sorrells and the Rev. Eric Faust. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., tonight at Harris Funeral Funeral Home. Memorials may be sent to El Bethel United Methodist Church. MRS. OLLIE HELMS Mrs. Ollie Hord Helms, 71, of 309 Walker Street, Kings Moun- tain, died Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Cleo and Sally Blanton Hord. She was a retired textile employee and member of Pied- mont Baptist Church. Survivors, include one son, Stephen Helms of Charlotte; one brother, Cleo Hord Jr. of Baltimore, Md.; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be con- ducted Saturday at 2 p.m., at Piedmont Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Spencer. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m., Friday at Harris Funeral Home. HELDA HEAVNER Funeral services for Helda Mae Heavner, 62, of 311 Walker St., who died Wednesday in Cleveland Memorial Hospital, were conducted Friday at 11 o'clock from El Bethel United Methodist Church of which she was a member. Rev. Lyn Sorrells and Rev. Sidney Lanier officiated and in- terment was in Bethlehem Cemetery. A retired textile worker, she was the wife of Pete Heavner and the daughter of the late Dewey and Nellie Byars Bookout. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Tim Heavner of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Gail Herndon and Kathy Dixon of Kings Mountain; one brother, Dewey Bookout, Jr. of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Kathleen Summitt of Kings Mountain and Billie Thornburg of Grover; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Harris Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. RICHARD SELF Richard James Self, 76, of 611 Temple Drive, Kings Mountain, died at 5:10 p.m., Tuesday, at Kings Mountain Hospital. A York County, S.C., native, he was the son of the late James and Minnie Snipe Self. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines. Survivors include his wife, Edyth Jackson Self; one son, James Self of Kings Mountain; one foster son, Fred Gossett of Lutz, Fla.; two great- grandchildren; and one-great- great-grandchild. Funeral services will be con- ducted at 2 pm, Thursday at Harris Chapel by the Rev. Dar- rell Coble and the Rev. Wray Thornburg. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. JEFFERY BOLIN Jeffery Scott Bolin, 25, of Highway 198, Earl, died October 8, in an automobile accident on Sharon Church Road near Earl. A native of Kings Mountain, he was the son of Norman Bolin and Dallie Boyles Ivey and was employed as a mixer with Metrolina Plastics in Shelby. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Kelly Bolin of Shelby; and five sisters, Donna Oliver of Kings Mountain, Ana Kinley of Caroleen, Tracy Gilliland of Boiling Springs, and Wanda Lynn Crotts and Tonda Toney, both of Shelby. Funeral services were con- ducted Tuosioy at 2 p.m., at the Harris Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Eugene Land. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery. MONTE HUNTER Funeral services for Hubert Monte Hunter, 52, of Route 4, who died Saturday morning in Kings Mountain Hospital after a month’s illness, will be con- ducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bynum Chapel AME Zion Church. Rev. Stella Jackson and Rev. M.L. Campbell will officiate at the rites. The family receive Hunter was son of Mrs. Dorothy Marshall of Kings Mountain. Also surviving are his step- father, John Marshall, also of the home; his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Taylor of Kings Moun- tain; seven children, three sisters and two brothers. Hunter was a former employee of the Kings Mountain Herald and Barrett Floor Covering. F.0. “DOCK” CARROLL Finley O. “Dock’’ Carroll, 84, of Route 1, Kings Mountain, died Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. at Kings Mountain Hospital after several months illness. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Johnston Carroll and Avalonia McSwain Carroll. He was a retired employee of Sunrise Dairy. The committee’s recommen- dation on the bond offering resulted in a concentration on the heavy ticket items,’’ as Manager Wood put it, and will delay con- struction of addition of treatment capacity and of another delivery line to the city from the filtration plant at the lake. “We've got to be sure we are able to handle the debt service item for the next 5-7 years before we can afford to do all that needs to be done,” Wood noted. Items under discussion ran the asking total to around $16-million before it fell at about $9.2 million against a previously announced $12.5 million. Other items discussed included response of the city to a pretreat- ment implementation schedule required by N.C., request from the Town of Grover to renew water purchase contract, request for discounts from lake users due to the lowering of the water level and the Dover St. water exten- sion project. The revised EPA 201 plan for the Crowders Creek sewerage project was also discussed. On Friday, Oct. 7, The Gastonia Gazette reported new informa- tion that could “be the death knell” for the project. Lydia Mitchell Honored On Her 80th Mrs. Lydia Mitchell, 80, was ~ honored at a surprise birthday dinner Saturday evening at Kings Mountain Depot Center. Hosting the event were her niece, Mary Elizabeth Smith of Kings Mountain; her daughter, Pearl Pressley of Bridgeport, Conn., son Frank Mitchell of Cleveland, Ohio and grandson, Johnny Frank Mitchell of Newport News, Va. Her great- nieces assisted in serving refreshments. Birthday Mixed flowers decorated the tables in the Depot Center which were overlaid with white linen tablecloths. More than 125 friends and relatives enjoyed turkey and roast beef sand- wiches, chicken, party sand- wiches, chips, nuts, mints, cookies, birthday. cake and punch. ? Entertainment was provided by The Swinging Mountaineer Band of which Lydia is a member. BRIDGES Funeral services for James Rufus Bridges, 77, of Route 3, who died Oct. 4, were conducted Thursday at 4 p.m. at Long Creek Presbyterian Church of which he was a member. Rev. Charles Davenport of- ficiated and interment was in the church cemetery. Mr. Bridges was a native of Gaston County, retired house carpenter and farmer, and hus- band of Katherine May Hager Bridges. He was the son of the late William Ervin and Margaret Willis Bridges. In addition to his wife, sur- vivors include two sons, Vance Ervin Bridges and Martin Bridges of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Frances Wilson of Bessemer City and Marie Neal of Kings Mountain; four brother, Tom Bridges of Lexington, Hood, Arnold and Ray Bridges, all of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Bryte Foster of Chester, S.C. and Bonnie Absher of Bessemer Ci- ty; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. SPARKS Funeral services for Ira Short Sparks, 89, of Casar, who died Wednesday in Cleveland Memorial Hospital, were con- ducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church by Rev. Carl Greene and Rev. Cecil Buff, interment following in the church cemetery. Mrs. Sparks was the daughter of the late James A. and Janie Pearson Bowman. She was retired from Cleveland Mill and Power Co. Her first husband was the late Carl Short and her second hus- band was the late Luther Sparks. She was a member of New Home United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mozelle Swanson of Los Angeles, Calif. and Verta Lublanezki of Kings Mountain; a brother, Woodrow Bowman of Lawndale, three sisters, Ida Waters, Mrs. Hobart Mull and Mattie McMurry of Lawndale; seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
