Front row, left to right, Margaret Crocker, Ethel Beam, Margaret Pressley, Thelma Herndon, Bill Hoffman and Bill Wells. Second row, Lucille Ledford, June Baumgardner, William McGinnis, Anry Grissom, Jeannette Howell, Myrtle Baumgardner and Emma Proctor. Back row, Ervin Bailey, Marion Dixon, Boyce Dixon, Robert Wells, Elmer Goforth and Carlson Stewart. Flowers Bring Back Memories Last Sunday Lena Goforth had some of her peonies in the church. Peonies are always a fragrant re- minder of my mama and some of the people of the past. When Dr. Adams, Alice Ann and baby Kelly came to Grover, Mama's house was to be their home. It was decided to redo the yard. There was a scurry to lay claim to shrubbery, grapevines, lilies-of-the-valley, rose bushes, plants and tree cut- tings, and peonies. We brought one to transplant here. It sort of pouted over being moved for several sea- sons but, in the meantime, Mrs. Maude Hamrick would call me ev- ery spring to come get some of her peonies to put in Shiloh Church in memory of the friendship she and mama, and the families too, en- joyed so many Grover years. When it was decided to put the new sanc- tuary of First Baptist Church on Mrs. Maude's house site, I'm not sure what became of the peony “bushes. It cheers me to think that the sweetness of memories blend with the fragrance of our offerings today, becoming an acceptable sac- rifice, pleasing to God. Patsy had another nap. It hap- pened right when I was telling her the intricate details of my recent remarkable root canal. These were no ordinary details either. A stu- dent of dentistry was observing the process. The performing dentist was explaining the entire proce- dure to not only the student, but to “the assistant as well, Inquiring questions were getting informative answers. So, you can imagine how many extra intricacies I had to re- late. I was sure she'd be fascinated with each of the three extra trips to the dentist to get the temporary fill- ings that kept coming out replaced. Each trip was unique in itself. And I'm sure she napped through the entire part about anticipating get- ting the tooth crowned--anticipat- ing getting it over with and paid for, that is. John Higginbotham's mother and aunt Joyce Phillips from Macon Ga., came to Grover last Wednesday to be here to attend the KMLT play, and perhaps, moreso, to go to Pfeiffer College to see John receive his diploma for a master's in Business Administration. I stopped by on my way to the opening night of the play to extend a Grover News wel- come and mentioned that Glenn was a native of Georgia. My rat- ings soared immediately and then more when I told her Glenn had many times played ball in her hometown of Wadby. I believe she will return to Georgia feeling more secure that John and her children Fishing Lakes E. Lincoln County Near E. I did- n't mention that Glenn sometimes thinks he's Grover vintage. Grover'll grab you if you don't watch out. I don't know how cakes, cookies, kids, classes (weekdays and Sundays), church, cute dads, and other cumulative chores and cares keep Patsy so alert and the intraca- cies of root canal do not. I stopped by Lillie Mae Rollins’ and was glad to see her brother Nelson Boheler. They were going to Clover to the funeral of their aunt. Went on next door to chat a bit with Lucille Davis. We are con- cerned for our good friend Beth Bridges Byers in Blacksburg. Beth is one of those whose life has had so much of what is true and noble and right, pure, lovely and of good report that our concern can only be of gratitude. Isn't it good to see Allen--Allen Gill--in the Grover yards again? His smile and wave are like more blossoms. Maybe I should make a sleep in- ducer tape about the intricacies of root canal. Thelma Hambright has returned from Memphis, Tn., where she vis- ited daughter Catchie and Steve Huntley. Paul Godfrey spent last week in Ohio. Stopped in to see Bub and Bryte Keeter. Peggy had been with them for the last week- end in April. Edith Morgan has been with her sister, Lucille, in Virginia. The Joel Rountrees were in Newton Sunday for the confir- mation of Patsy's niece, Ashley Smith. Bocts Cockrell has a newly painted house. She anticipates vis- it soon from sons Bill and Andy and families. IN fact, we're hoping for many Grover comebacks to help us celebrate the 200th birth- day of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church--and Shiloh's new organ. In the meantime, let us celebrate this day. Let's celebrate and hope that those who come to Grover go away singing Where the Carolinas begin-- That's where I've been Will go again... That's where I've been And found a friend-- Where the Carolinas begin. One of the most important days during our year. It is the day we all want to make our mothers feel special! We all hope our carefully chosen gifts will somehow tell them just how much they mean to us. However, those of us who are mothers might do well to use this day as a "Checking Up Day: for us, a kind of measuring unit for the past year. We might need to ask ourselves, What kind of mother have I been this past year? How many mistakes have I made in my relationship with my child? Have I been too much of a hurry? Have I given my child my full attention or Just 'leftovers' of my time? I read somewhere, "When we are too busy for our children, we are too busy!" I believe mothering to be the most important job in life. In the hands of mothers, rest the future of nations. If this statement sounds too profound, think about it! Children are the future leaders and inhabitants of the world tomor- row. They are the raw material of the future. Even Napoleon in his time recognized the need for good mothers when he said, "France's greatest need is mothers." Our children arrive in our care, brand new and fresh. A heavenly bundle of untapped energy, intelli- gence and ideas. Our job as moth- ers is to take this wonderful raw material and by daily shaping with much love, we are to attempt to mold this little child into an honest, loving, caring person. We are to teach them of God's love and His enduring values. I realize, as with all jobs, things will not always work out as we wish them to, even when we have tried our very best. Still, we dare not take our job lightly. Especially, in the light of the fact that we will give an ac- count of the new life that has been Chestnut Ridge BY MYRLE KING entrusted to us, On Mother's Day in our church, we will be having dedication of new babies. By dedicating her ba- by to the Lord, each mother is promising that to the best of her ability, she will teach this child in the "nurture and admonition of God." This is also a good time for mothers of older children to re- dedicate ourselves to the task of being the kind of mother God ex- pects us to be. Our youth group had a cookout on Saturday, April 29 with 16 young people attending. That same night, 23 of our young people and adults attended a special program at Parkwood Baptist Church. The program, a magic show presented by Lou Leventhal, was geared to show spiritual truths to the young TYLER ALLEN people through examples of illu- sion. Everyone enjoyed the day very much. Other events planned by the youth leaders, Randy and Delores Davis, are: A "Lock-In" in Friday, May 12 at the church fellowship hall. The young people will have a program featuring tapes on Satanism and the effects of rock music. A trip to the Ashboro Zoo is planned on June 24. This outing is planned as an opportunity to young people and older members to spend a day together at the zoo. The en- tire church is invited to join in on this day. A trip to Carowinds is planned on July 28. The Gaston Baptist Association has rented the Carowinds Park for that Friday to give all the young people in the as- sociation a chance to enjoy a good day there. Call Randy or Delores at 739-1216 for more information on the special events. We extend our sympathy to our member and my niece, Rebecca Elmore Wilson, in the loss of her grandmother. Mrs. Virginia Walker (Jinks) Elmore died May 3, 1989, at her home in Gastonia. Tyler Allen In Contest Tyler Allen, four-year-old clog- ging student of Nancy Riddle, in- structor with Jane Campbell Dance Academy in Shelby, performed this weekend at Showstoppers National Talent competition in Lexington. He performed a routine to Ghostbusters" in the six and under age category in which he won first place. Tyler is now eligible to com- pete at Myrtle Beach, S . C. in July. Tyler is the son of Timmy and Dena Allen and grandson of Bill and Betty Allen and Dean and Judy Bowen, all of Grover.
