Local Road Project Although not now funded by the state, a Kings Mountain road pro- ject is one of several new projects scheduled by the state for a feasi- bility study by the N.C. Board of Transportation which Friday adopt- ed a $5 billion update of the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) that includes nu- merous projects affecting Cleveland and Gaston Counties. Because of Highway Trust Fund revenues, more than 400 new pro- jects were added to this year's TIP, and about 400 projects from last year's program were accelerated. "Of these, 162 were new bridge pro- nA jects and 230 were accelerated bridge projects. The TIP sets highway construc- tion priorities for the next seven years The Kings Mountain project, scheduled for feasibility study and/or right of way protection, is defined as SR 2283 ( Dixon School Road) to the southeast plan- ning area boundary, a two lane fa- cility on a new location which would cut across Phifer Road to ~ On State Study List N.C. 216 to U. S. 74 and was sug- gested in the Kings Mountain Thoroughfare Plan in 1980. This major thoroughfare would tie the western part of the loop into SR 2283 and build a new grade separa- tion with the railroad. Among the projects benefiting Cleveland and Gaston counties are: +NC 150-Four-lane highway on new location from NC-150 to south DeKalb Street in Cleveland County (R-519). Construction has been ac- celerated from 1994 to 1993. +NC-180-Widen to a multi-lane highway from US-74 Bypass to US 74 Business in Shelby. Construction and right-of -way re- main on schedule. US-74-Shelby Bypass from US- 74 Business west of Shelby to US 74 Business east of Shelby. Widen to six lanes. Scheduled for right-of- way protection. +Hudson Boulevard-Multi-lane highway on new location from U. S. 321 to New Hope Road in Gaston County. "These are all very worthwhile new causes and which benefit local folks directly," said Mrs. Alexander. In addition KM United Fund has budgeted $13, 965 for the KM Ministerial Association Helping Hand Fund and chaplain; $7560 to Cleveland County Shelter Home; Nears $8,820 to the KM Boys Club; $7560 to Grover Rescue Squad; $7,770 to Kings Mountain Rescue Squad; $6,510 to CODAP; $3,780 to Salvation Army; $1470 to Cleveland County Mental Health Association; $4305 to Hospice of Cleveland County; $2,730 to Child Abuse Prevention; $7200 to Cleveland Vocational Industries which serves adult developmental- ly disabled citizens; $8,610 to Boy Scouts; $9,135 to Girl Scouts and $20,475 to the American Red Cross. Goal "One gift will help so many peo- ple," said Mrs. Alexander who said that divisional chairmen are work- ing hard to attain their goal by call- ing on individuals, industries and _ businesses in the community. No division was goal this week but Alexander said divisional chairmen are running a close race to see who will be the first to reach the finish line. The big industry di- vision had reached more than 80% of its target this week.
