Consider Real Estate Career If you are a college-bound high school junior or senior, you've probably already started visiting colleges and pondering the career choices open to you. The decision you make now will have a major impact upon your future. "For en- ergetic, imaginative and bright young individual, real estate is one area where fortunes still can be made, and at the same time, good done for the community, " says Jerry King, president of the Kings Mountain Board of Realtors. Seldom does one have the opportu- nity in a vacation to combine pri- vate gain with public benefaction," he continued, The members of the Kings Mountain Board of Realtors ~ would like to offer the following information on the field of real es- tate in the 1990's. To many young people, real es- tate is simply somebody selling a * house. That may be what the aver- age consumer sees due to the ex- tensive advertising necessary to bring homebuyers. and sellers. to-.. ‘gether, but real estate is much more. The real estate industry is a huge business encompassing a va- riety of specialty services. Land development, for instance, is one of the most active and prof- itable branches of the industry. Executive ability is a pre-requisite for anyone hoping to turn a piece of raw land into a marketable sub- division of new homes, a shopping mall or an industrial park. To select a site, analyze costs, secure financ- ing, install improvements, oversee construction and market the fin- ished product, requires a multitude of decisions. To make them, a de- veloper must have extensive knowledge and expert advice. The field of financing is a large and complex component of the re- al estate industry. Whether special- izing in financing, as in the case of a mortgage banker, or simply of- fering prospective property owners the best information possible, real estate entrepreneurs must under- stand available loans their variable interest rates and loan periods. Appraisal is another highly spe- cialized field offering a rewarding future for interested young people. Appraisers must have thorough knowledge of the principles under- lying land use, urban growth, fi- nancing, construction, architecture, taxation and zoning. Years ago, ap- praisers learned their jobs by do- ing. Today, college courses. are of-, fered in appraisal work so that a student now has accurate knowl- edge of the field upon graduation and is ready to start immediately. Real estate counseling is a grow- ing field due to the increasing com- plexity of the real estate industry. The counselor advises clients whether land will best be used for a shopping mall, a resort develop- ment or and industrial park. Shower Honors Sharon Chaney A drop-in stork shower Sunday at the home Mrs. John Grant hon- ored Mrs. Sharon Moore Chaney. Mrs. Kay Woody and Mrs. Grant hosted the event. After presenting gifts to Mrs. Chaney, the guests were invited to help themselves to a variety of re- freshments. The table was decorat- ed with the color theme of aqua and white, which are the colors of the nursery. The center piece, which was hand painted by Mrs. Grant, was a teddy bear riding on Sharon Eaker On City Sharon Eaker joined the City of Kings Mountain Aug. 7 as switch- board/receptionist with duties also with the city personnel department. A Kings Mountain native, she is a graduate of Kings Mountain High the back of a rocking horse. On ei- ther side of the center piece were brass bugles accented with bows which symbolized the heralding in of the new arrival. Mrs. Chaney was presented a corsage, made of silver baby spoon accented with pink and blue rib- bons and baby's breath, by Mrs. Grant. Many friends and family members attended and shared in the joy of the new arrival, which is due around January 1. There are additional areas of real estate specialities open to young people entering the business world, each with professional support. For instance, the National Association of Realtors, the nation's largest trade association, has nine affiliat- ed institutes, societies and coun- cils, each focusing on a different aspect of real estate. Men and women skilled in these areas have a tremendous opportu- nity to be of service to the commu- nity as well as to advance them- selves financially. Members of the Kings Mountain Board of Realtors are frequently called upon observe in important positions on civic boards, planning commissions and task forces which have a lasting impact on community develop- ment. With large cities expanding their suburban seams and new industries dotting the countryside, the need for trained people in the real estate field is continuous. "I can think of no other profession, which allows young people to carve out a more satisfying career than in real es- tate," says King.
